Yoshitoshi ABe thread

Talk about anything that ABe has had a hand in. Anime, manga, doujinshi, art, etc!

I finished Texhnolyze on stream not too long ago and loved it, even if it was a bit of a tough watch at times. Certain parts of that anime absolutely blew me away (namely the scenes on the surface) and more than made up for its shortcomings.

Manga Thread

Talk about what manga you've been reading!

I've been reading an older manga called Yume Tsukai by Ueshiba Riichi. It's about magical shrine maidens with weird powers solving paranormal mysteries and stuff. Fairly standard concept but what makes it good in my opinion is just how crazy and bizarre the stories get, as well as some really fantastic art and a nostalgic sort of comedy. It's sometimes goofy, sometimes quite emotional, and other times borders on Junji Ito-esque horror scenarios. I really like the creepy body horror stuff, and the comedy between the weirdo cast is fun. I especially like the over the top lolicon character.

RECOMENDATIONS THEAD I GEUSS

Can I get a recommendation for an anime or manga that includes plenty of lolis, shotas too if possible, is absolutely overflowing with fanservice, is unimaginably fucked up, trauma, gore, etc, and ideally has vibrant and complex world-building.

I've already seen made in abyss, elfen lied, and a certain series.

the loli fanservice part is nonnegotiable I want absolutely gratuitous fanservice.

non anime/manga otaku media general

Let's have a thread to discuss visual novels, light novels, and other non anime/manga related otaku media! I would preffer if we avoid v-tuber discussion in this thread, I personally consider it more youtube/streamer culture than otaku culture. However if you feel differently that is okay.

Recently I have been getting into visual novels and eroge. My favorite so far is subarashiki hibi.
Right now I am playing chaos;head and Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo. Chaos;head is pretty good, but it's a little frustrating, because it feels like characters often speak in a cryptic way to the main character for no reason other than to stretch out the plot. I find myself frustrated with the characters sometimes although in general i would say the vn does a good job with regards to making the reader unsure of what's real and what's delusion, putting them in the emotions of the main character.
I am not really far enough into sharin no kuni to make a judgement on it yet, but I thought it was interesting the the mc is a stoner. Not something you see often in japanese media.
What is your favourite vn? what have you been reading lately?

Any shows you guys are looking forward to?
R: 4 / I: 5
You have just been put in charge of creating an original anime for your favourite studio! What story will you come up with? Here is mine:
A loose adaptation of don quixote, instead of being obsessed with chivalry novels, the main character is obsessed with light novels and thinks he's a light novel protagonist, joined by his next door neighboor ie sancho (who should be a cute girl probably because anime), and maybe instead of a horse it's an old beat up bike or something. Make it like an adventure comedy that mostly follows the original plot but in modern day japan, and I think that would be pretty funny.
What ideas do you have sushis?

2020 Summer Anime Thread

What're you already planning on watching? Anything that catches your eye?

Unfortunately the virus has made this season like half the size of what it was meant to be, so probably only fishing and Fruits Basket for me at first and maybe I'll pick up Kanojo and Uzaki-chan. Feels like a super weak season, at least partially because there's so little to choose from.

Devil's Advocate

How would you defend anime/manga against the accusation that it's sexist? Obviously there are anime/manga this doesn't apply to, but I'm talking more like moe/bishoujo type stuff, like 90% of what's on this board.

I'm just playing devil's advocate here, and if you exclusively like gritty action manga like Berserk this doesn't apply to you, but think things like Konosuba – Aqua being a 16 or 17 year old character with no pants and huge boobs with jiggle physics. Most moe media focuses on high school or middle school characters and is not shy about sexualizing them. If someone you respected approached you and your Kuroneko dakimakura pillow and said you were promoting a sexist subculture how could you reasonably defend yourself?

Have any of you met other "otaku" irl? A small part, but admittedly a part of the reason I got into anime is because it's a relatively small subculture in which it should theoretically be easy to connect with other people over a shared interest. I haven't invested that much time into it, but already I can probably find at least one anime or manga I've consumed in common with any given otaku. It's fun to hang out in forums like this, but has anyone had any experience connecting with people, coincidentally or on purpose, over this shared hobby?

2016 Anime Awards and Analysis

I have conducted a thorough analysis of anime from the year 2016. The primary purpose of this analysis is to identify works which have artistic merit, and to classify the nature of that artistic merit. Secondarily, my intent here is to rank the works in terms of their superiority in various categories. This will allow for comparison with other surveys of 2016 anime. This analysis is an expression of my own personal opinions and did not involve input from anyone else. I did this for my own intellectual and personal satisfaction, but I also hope that others may find it interesting or useful. At the very least, maybe this will generate some interesting discussion. Additionally, if you're looking for anime to watch, you can peruse through the specific categories I've provided to identify works that are likely to suit your tastes.

Only anime which started airing in 2016 are considered here. Meaning that anime for which the first season aired before 2016 are not considered (ex. neither Hibike Euphonium nor Love Live are candidates here). The considered anime are evaluated on the basis of all seasons that have aired (not just the first season in 2016). Movies are not included unless they are related to a TV anime (ex. Bungou Stray Dogs). I am conducting reviews for other years using this same system. Annual reviews are typically done as soon as the year ends, but I believe my methodology here is superior for conducting reviews of years retrospectively. Furthermore, classifying the year's best works only by season/genre I find is an ineffective method for identifying meritorious works, so I've included more-specific categories.

Categories and their results are listed below. Winning titles for each category are separated by commas, with the superior titles being listed first. For the genre categories I've provided two answers (the winning title followed by the runner up). However, polls for anime of the season and anime of the year typically list many top candidates in their results, so I've followed a similar procedure with my results here. For the anime of the season and year results, I've listed the top-5 candidates in order of superiority, with the winning title listed first and the progressively lesser titles listed afterwards.

Regarding the genre results, there are a couple important details:
Note: titles are classified by their superiority with respect to the stated genre alone, not overall quality (for example: x anime is a good sci-fi anime regardless of the writing being terrible, y anime is a good romance anime even though the comedy is unfunny, etc…). For classifications according to overall quality, please see the best-in-season and best-in-year results, or the list of highly scored anime that is provided much further below as well as in the attached table(pic related). Keep in mind that some highly rated shows don't necessarily fit neatly into a genre. Conversely, excelling in a genre category is not necessarily an indication of overall quality.
Note: the romance genre here refers exclusively to conventional hetero romance; shoujo ai and shounen ai are provided here as separate genres.

Best by season listed below.
Winter: Prince of Stride, Hai to Gensou no Grimgar, Koukaku no Pandora, Norn9, Reikenzan
Spring: Sakamoto Desu ga, Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge, Shounen Maid, Kuma Miko, Sansha Sanyou
Summer: ReLIFE, Amanchu, Dream Festival, Tenkyou no Alderamin, Orange

This kind of manga was born after WW2 when a group of authors got tired of the overly-comical and children-like contents usually contained in manga and decided to create their own movement based on telling the horrors of the war and showing what kind of lives people led at the time.
Some acclaimed authors are Yoshihiro Tatsumi, Tsuge Yoshiharu and Tadao, Seiichi Hayashi, Kamimura Kazuo and many others

Odd Taxi

Nice first episode. What stood out to me the most was the dialogue, it's surprisingly easy on the ears. Everything flows and fits naturally. Seems to be a pretty intriguing mystery being set up as well.

Wonder Egg Priority

So I finally got around to starting this, let's talk about it! I'll post my thoughts as I get further in.

I'm not sure what the fuck I'm getting into here but it's giving me strong suffering flags. Really pretty show, looks on the same level as modern KyoAni stuff like Chuunibyou and Hibike and AmaBuri. I love the character designs so far and the dream world stuff is very fun to watch. OST near the end of episode 1 stood out to me as well. Among other things it kinda reminds me of Yume Nikki with the whole "shut-in girl explores weird dream world" thing

So what I get from just seeing episode 1 is that she visits some kind of dream world with the power to bring her suicided friend back to life, and to do so she has to play along with some weird beetle gacha to "protect" other suicided girls in the dream world for… reasons?

When I think about WHY I like anime one of the main reasons I always fall back on is that it has genres that I don't think exist in Western media. I'm talking specifically about SoL, and even more specifically about stuff like K-ON; Kobayashi's Dragon Maid; Girl's Last Tour; Yotsuba; etc… All of them have extremely low levels of drama and personal conflict, elements of comedy (although notably not comedy focused), and a strong focus on warm, happy, non-romantic relationships. So much of Western television is either hyper dramatized or straight comedy. I can be gripped by Breaking Bad, and I can laugh at Seinfeld, but I can't think of any Western shows that evoke the emotional connection I feel towards certain anime.

Can you think of an example of a Western show/movie that comes close to the SoL genre?

Horriblesubs is dead, which means we probably won't have many good options for immediate rips. What subber are you going to use instead (assuming you can't just watch raws)? I know Erai is a thing, are they any good?

Pre-toonami anime in the west

I made a thread similar to this on lainchan but I figured I'd post it here as well. Post instances you can find of anime being referenced or mentioned outside of Japan, pre-toonami!

Here's some cool shit I found!

The first time Cartoon Network aired anime! This was in 1995, a few years before toonami!

Samachan User CSS

For those interested, I tried out using Samachan's theme here and it looks very much 1:1 as it originally appeared back on Samachan, as long as you have Yotsuba B selected and use this to override that.

To use Samachan's theme, copy and paste miko.css contents in User CSS in [Options] to the top right of the page, and make sure you select Yotsuba B in the General tab.
