We win our first match in the group stage!!

It's a perfect victory at 5-0!!

But… What?

Why do we need to go to the fifth game when our victory was already decided?

Shouldn't it be over by the third game?

Yura:
Now, didn't you hear them say they'd let all matches run the full five contests to better measure each team's strength?

T-they did…?

 No.5157

The previous thread was wiped, meaning I have to post this all over again.

————————-

Lest I forget any details, I'll write my notes here:

- Whenever there's a different reading for the words written, I add it next to the specific translated word in parenthesis.

- In order to better carry the text from one page to the other, I made some slight adjustments.

For example, >>5147 and >>5148
I chained it as:
"Before settling on Sasorida-san's special training (penalty),
I wonder
how is Suzumegahara doing…"

A translation a little more literal/faithful to the original writing would be:
"I'll think of a special training (punishment) for Sasorida-san
As for Suzumegahara
How did it go"

Same thing in >>5155 and >>5156
"Take a good look"
"IT'S MY TABLE TENNIS!!"
More literal/faithful:
"Look carefully"
"(AT) MY TABLE TENNIS"

- The term "match" gets thrown a lot, courtesy of yours truly. The match is supposed to be the whole thing, while contest is the name given to each match. I'm using the terminology used by the tennis association guys.

- Koyori's nickname
>>5150
I was very partial to "Taily" over "magemage" because I think it's a bit of a strain on the reader to go from an english sillabary headfirst into the japanese sillabary while reading a line. "Mage" in english reads different from "mage" in japanese and that could be confusing. I said I was very partial, because… It took until typesetter-san's notes on the previous chapter to be reminded the word "wag" exists. I think it's a perfect fit for Koyori. Waggywaggy, magemage, they're pretty close. But it's probably too late to go around changing nicknames and, admittedly, I first got into takkyuu musume through the anime and its questionable stylistic choices.

Keep it however you see fit.
"Give them a big waggy-wag!!"
Can easily become
"Wag those pigtails at 'em!"
Or something to that effect.

And now, because I get to repost, I can correct a typo or two that went past me, as mentioned in the pastebin at XEXzQsz4.

I'll post the second half after a short break.

Not a fan of translating "Kurisu" as Chris. "Chrissy" also feels unnecessary. It staying "Kurisu" would be nice but it might lead to confusion. Oh well.

Same thing about linking the text in two separate pages, here >>5149 (You) >>5150

>>5163
>IT'S A TECHNIQUE THAT HUMILIATES

"A humiliating technique" also fits, but that's the type of text that doesn't set the context very well. Is it humiliating to resource to it, humiliating to fall victim to it, or humiliating to use/fall victim to it in Agari's opinion? In this way, it becomes clear that (at least) in the world of scorching-hot table tennis girls, the counter is a technique that humiliates those who fall victim to it.

>>5165
>Seconded!

This was the translation used by typesetter-kun, so I decided to stick to it to preserve consistency. In japanese, it's the exact same line as used in chapter 2.

>>5167
Awkward-sounding but not incorrect japanese from Christine, as always.

And just like that, I want Mejirosaka to win Nationals.

First off the chapter title. I must say this chapter left me in a very poetic mood, so I gave it a slight bit of flair.

"So I may meet you". Not "meet" strictly in the sence of "meeting up with someone", but also in the sense of wanting to meet someone's expectations, be on the same page, to be able to reply in kind. A more faithful translation would be something like "in order to answer your feelings"/"so I may answer your feelings".

◆◆◆◆◆
This is my proudest moment as a translator. I can't believe I cracked the code. The first sentence is about getting sushi in roppongi. Setting aside the fact Christine is making things even hazier by using improper intonations, the big set-up here is that both "shisu" and "giroppon" happen to be slang words for "sushi" and "roppongi", so I was led to believe she's speaking some pretty specialized slang (the joke, I thought, being how often foreigners don't understand the simplest words yet know some really complex, obscure words)… But then in the second sentence, no slang is actually used. Instead, the words are reflected on themselves. The clue is in "I've got to hone my speaking skills" (note that she is reflecting words even in her english-speaking thoughts). Christine is reflecting the word "shaberi" (talk) in here as well (into "beshari").

"Kingspea skills"
"Soko no denshinbashira wo migi ni magatte" becomes "Soko no radenshinbashi" wo migi ni te~maga–
that "–" (ッ) is not an emotional indicative, even though Christine looks so mentally strained.

 No.5223

First off, one thing directed at everything translated so far.

Reading the table tennis glossary of terms, I realized that "volley" and "stroke" are not interchangeable. A "volley" has a set meaning while "stroke" is the name for every single type of table tennis stroke used (drive, smash, etc.). I didn't notice this sooner but, as I mentioned exhaustingly over the course of these translations, I am not a takkyuu expert and I only really bother to research terms when they are significant to the plot (like Kuroba's RPB). I wouldn't have guessed that even here there would be a technicality.

Curiosity
I also found out that one of the terms for the first iteration of table tennis back in england was whiff-whaff. I find this term exceedingly cute.

As for this chapter:
I found all of the information above while trying to find a proper translation of the term 誘い球, used in >>5212 , which I ended up translating a little too literally to "lure ball" as I couldn't find a term for it.

Thanks. I'll do the final checks on ch 3 tomorrow and then start 4. Should be done sometime this week.

I think all the volley/stroke stuff so far has been kept straight. I'm decently familiar with real tennis and a lot of the terminology crosses over with takkyuu, so I'm trying to keep the basic stuff consistent with what I know. Might not be much help with the special moves, though.

>Are you sure this is "envious"? The context feels more like it's just expectations.
It does use the Japanese word for envy.
I guess it's the benevolent kind of envy. "Must be nice, I wish I was like you", that kinda stuff.

 No.5256

>>5246
Sorry it took me this long to reply.

>Are you sure this is "envious"? The context feels more like it's just expectations.

I was (and honestly still am) uncertain myself. The context certainly doesn't feel like it's a type of spiteful feeling, considering even Christine's classmates console her when she fails to live up to expectations. I sentence searched it and every time it was used in the context of "envy".

Looking deeper into it and other synonyms right now, 羨望 is not as negative a word as other forrms of "envy". Other forms deal with a feeling of unfairness, while 羨望 seems to convey that the person holding that feeling perceives the object of that feeling as unquestionably superior ("嫉妬" - "She's better than me at takkyuu because [excuses] - I will now hold a grudge"; "羨望" - "She's better than me at takkyuu because [reasons] - ii na…").

That's the feeling I'm getting. Even the japanese translate it directly as "envy" and see in the english word a subtlety that we don't really tend to see.

https://docoic.com/47681#i-9
>羨望 is used when you want to become as good as the person perceived as superior. 嫉妬 is used when holding negative feelings such as hate and envy.

>羨望 conveys "envy", "envious" in english while 嫉妬 conveys "jealousy", "jealous".

Therefore, perhaps a better translation would be "expectant gazes", or something to that effect.

All this to say, you can count it as a miss from my part.

>Missing TL in the panel after "That's why I invited you". Barely visible out-of-bubble text.

>It's a little hard to tell, but I'm assuming Chris' speech is still stilted whenever she does dialogue (and I guess the monologue boxes too?).

Like mentioned, every time one of her sentences is supposed to be her speaking english, I precede the line with an (E). The tell as to how you know she's speaking english is that her text is read horizontally rather than vertically. Compare >>5181 first panel on the upper right (speaking english) to >>5183 last pannel lower left (speaking Japanese).

I just noticed that I failed to add an (E) to the lines
"They understood…?"
"They understood… My feelings…?"

I chose to go with the more literal title because I'm not sure if it's fully referring to Chris since Koyori is also trying to meet feelings.
I went with keeping left-aligned text to indicate English, despite how it triggers my typesetter autism, since the original also opted to do that instead of using unique fonts (for once). It's more obvious in Japanese, but hopefully it still comes across clearly given the context.
Let me know if anything has strayed too much, especially where there's Asano poetry involved.

>Hands-up strike

I'm afraid I'm not a very creative mind.

If we search for "お手上げ" meanings, we get a plethora of results related to giving up. This could be some kind of wordplay by Asano-sensei, as in Koyori was brought up against a corner and gave up on her usual style of play, leading to creating this ability. Like a "give-up strike". Or it could be a reference to the dog motif, a dog lifting up her paws. A "shake strike". Or it could be literally only referring to the fact Koyori is bringing both hands up when she strikes. I decided to go for "hands-up" because Hanabi also goes for a literal movement of putting her hands up in reference to Koyori's technique (it could be that deeper levels of meaning simply escape her but, when in doubt, simple is best).

Another incredible chapter.

Again, note that all of Christine's dialogue is in that grammatically-correct-but-phonetically-awkward way, even in her thoughts.

>>5374
>Let us think
>When did table tennis become a way to be together?

By this Christine means that table tennis is not the only way they have of being together. This is referencing all the memories they made outside of table tennis club activities as shown in her flashbacks. When did table tennis become a means to an end, is what Christine is asking (and which I can't think of an elegant, concise way to convey… I translated right now, on the spot, the whole two chapters… Sorry I'm so late).

—-

In order to give enough "volume" to speech parts in the english translation, I passed part of the speech from a later section to the earlier section.

For example:

>>5376
>I have always loved
>To return the ball of the one I play against

If I left it literally, it would have become

>I

>Loved to return the ball of the one I played against

This is only my estimation, but I think a reader could easily miss that single "I".

>>5377
>>5378
>It seems like she has been awakened
>To her pride as a table tennis player, that is

A more literal (accurate) translation would be
>It seems like it has been awakened
>Her pride as a table tennis player
Or
>The pride of a table tennis player

Also of note the fact that "Instinct" is given the furigana "pride".

So this could just as well be
"It seems like it has been awakened"
"The(/Her) instinct(s) of(as) a table tennis player"

>>5380
And I forgot that it's not just "EVOLVES" it's "EVOLVES!!"

Taking a break, then I'll read the new chapter and then I'll translate it. Maybe…

 No.5382

Turns out I'll translate it tomorrow…

If you're going to point that out here you should point it out consistently. Whenever Koyori taps into the Tanoshii Force there's "waai" in katakana and now that Chris tapped into the Tanoshii Force there's "waai" in Latin script. It'll be especially important in part 3 of the chapter.
TL note: waai is tanoshii sounds
>>5381

You're right. Sometimes it can work for shorter lines, but more often it looks awkward just sitting there alone. Also means there's more to redraw. Splitting things up by clauses is usually good for balancing out how ridiculously Japanese goes from using a dozen characters for two words to squeezing an entire sentence in four.

>Chapter 5: Table tennis evolution
With hindsight of what the title actually means (>>5380), maybe this translation should be revised.
But how? I can't think of an English expression that conveys the meaning of "a style of table tennis play that triggers evolution in both the player and their opponent".
It's particularly awkward because "table tennis" is two words. "Evolution tennis" might work but "evolution table tennis" sounds wrong.
If you think outside the box, the construction of the phrase is not English-idiomatic in the first place. Maybe just "Evolution" would do? Or is that too non-specific?
How would you describe Koyori in English?

 No.5406

>>5405

You could do "in Table Tennis", "through Table Tennis", or just just cut the table tennis out as it's implied.

A chapter that thoroughly exposes my artistic shortcomings. I tried very hard to make it sound as touching in english as it did to me in Japanese, but I'm sure I fell very short of achieving that goal. My apologies for making your experience suffer and be ever grateful to typesetter-kun for polishing things out.

Especially important is this section:
>>5474
>>5475

What I interpret is being implied here is that Christine's tears flowed out because of her emotional connection to her teammates, specially Morumo, who was so moved due to Chrsitine's playing that she began to cry. It was her teammates' cheering and belief in Christie that restored her Aegis Counter after all.

The set-up on >>5474 implies the reason Christine didn't win was because HER tears flowed out, but the punch in >>5475 clarified it's because of Morumo's tears that Christine lost.

A more direct translation of Morumo's words is something like:
If tears didn't come out at the end [of the game]…
Chris would have won
I'm sorry…
Chris' table tennis (play) is so lovely…
[next page]
I couldn't hold them back [couldn't hold back tears]

Just as important is the section that comes exactly next:
>>5475
>>5476

"How could I have ever hoped to win" isn't about her match with Koyori. This connects with the flashback that comes immediately after. Christine isn't even thinking about Koyori or the city tournament anymore. She's thinking about her friends. Her initial goal was to make Morumo cry with table tennis, by winning against her. She achieved her initial goal without ever winning against Morumo (see >>5001 ). Through her match with Koyori, she realized her true priorities and what she lost along the way (see >>5182 and >>5183 ). Mejirosaka never needed to win Nationals to find true fulfillment.

A more direct translation of this section would be:
There's no way I could win
After all
I've already… [OR: I'm already]
[next page]
Become so fulfilled [OR: So fulfilled]

I can't think of anything else, except that now is a good time to remind everyone of the questionnaire they have going for takkyuu musume at

All things considered, this was a very satisfying conclusion. I still would have loved to see Mejirosaka all the way through to nationals (maybe there's still hope!… Or not, seeing as they'll have to face Teikoku in the group stage too…) but everything was tied up so well and the payoff is so cathartic I won't fault Asano-sensei too much if Mejirosaka is pushed to the sidelines (this better not be the last we see of them!).

 No.5487

>>5485
I see, it's a lot better than I thought it was initially. With this added element of "reaching out to Morumo through this match with Koyori", it shifts the true stakes of this match. They don't just lose because "the protagonists need to lose", they lose because the entire point of them being here was to bond together before Chris moving, and they achieve that during the match. It's a family hug for a sister moving away rather than the standard "you played well and now we're crying because of the cruel yet sweet catharsis of defeat" crying.

Yeah I think Asano nailed it. Hope we can see more of them sometimes after that though.

A more direct translation would be something like:
"If you're done in with this strike (furigana: play [style]), it's like getting told 'this is the end'. I think it's really good!"

>>5543
For those googling the phenomenon, be aware that the japanese definition doesn't specify what the affected people are going to the toilet for. There's two options and we've seen which one Koyori goes for.

>>5544
"Smooth" as in, she's got all the smooth moves, she makes things run smoothly.

Very funny overall, if lacking in pages. Thus ends the Mejorosaka arc and thus begins the Teikoku arc!

I was so caught up in explaining the Mariko Aoki phenomenon I forgot another thing: Koyori isn't literally saying "I get such a rush". I used that expression to properly connect it to the final koma in the english translation. In the original koma she's saying "Very… Very…".

 No.5783

After the current events, only one question comes to mind: what will be the future of death puns?!

Perhaps I'm thinking things too deeply, but I noticed Kuroba's speech ends a lot on longer vowels than needed (for example "desuyoo" instead of "desuyo"). I went and checked the oneshot to make sure but I'm undecided. She also seems to end her speech with interrogative forms rather than declarative forms more often than the typical polite japanese way of speaking but, again, I could be reading too much into things.

Hifumi makes another number pun here >>5759
ココ使ってもイイかにぃー?

Ni = Two

>>5772
The driver of the west's name has got furigana to back it up.
Her hair style looks familiar.

>>5773
Mogami places a "tabun" (maybe) in her speech about beginning to hate table tennis, but she says it so emphatically and "tabun" is a "maybe, with 90% certainty" type of possibility, so I decided to drop it for the added dramatic effect.

>>5781
Mogami says that the god of death loves Kuroba more than any other table tennis player. I had no idea whether or not I should leave the "god of" part so I compromised by adding an "itself" to the end for emphatic purposes.

SHE'S A PLAYER
WHO IS LOVED BY DEATH

Could work too.

I can't think of anything else to mention for now, so I'll end the post here.

I wonder if Asano will go all the way with a clean sweep for teikoku or if he allowed some Suzumegahara girls to win their matches (I'm thinking at least Kiruka and Munemune probably won theirs).

>>5779
So they actually won the match, it's not just Koyori anchoring. They might change the orders for the next matches after that?

This raises the question, who won and lost before that? Judging by the reactions, it seems the score was tied so far, but then again maybe not.

 No.5790

>>5785
True, but on the other hand Kumami tried to avoid playing Agari so she wouldn't break her. Kuroba seems to have no issue with what she's doing.

It's hard to tell now but so far I'm thinking they might be opposites in some way: Kumami is a good girl at heart who developed evil tendencies against her better judgement. Kuroba seems like she's actually bad at her core but has shown a friendly face to everyone she met.

Kumami -> Mind break (using takkyuu to traumatize Agari into becoming her obedient table tennis groupie)
Kuroba -> Corruption (warping Agari's mind into becoming the very thing that she hates through takkyuu)

With Kumami, Agari still strives to go above, but always staying below Kumami. A willing lackey who's been thoroughly disciplined into knowing her place.
With Kuroba, all of Koyori's work is undone and the tanoshii is no more. All that matters is the result. She's stuck with takkyuu because it's the one thing she's good at. She still aims to be above everyone but now it's by forcefully bringing down and squashing everyone under her.

Pic should make it easier to understand.

 No.5802

>>5799
It'd be an interesting subplot, since Koyori never cared much about the results, maybe even to a fault, so turning it all on its head after that loss might present unique opportunities. Of course that's hard to tell without seeing Koyori's reaction now.

Interestingly I think Agari wouldn't have self destructed if Kumami kept beating her, sandbagging on purpose and then pulling the rug under her feet revealing she was holding back is what could've made Agari break. So in the end it was kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

If Koyori did just get her own Kuma equivalent it's fitting that she gets one that is laser focused on ping pong and her ping pong aesthetics (idols) like Koyori is (ping pong communication, her brand of ping pong) while the core of Agari and Kuma's arc had more to do with their internal issues and self actualization on a more personal level.

I can't help but wonder why show Kuroba having one play style in chapter 0 and then suddenly go "nope she was completely different in every practice match after that one".
Editorial meddling? Or 4D Asano chess? I want to believe in the latter.

Not this time but, now that you mention it, I can totally see what you mean. The original wording doesn't come close to any such innuendo. It's just meant to be Koyori saying she can't climb off the rail.

It means all those factors. Hokuto is literally using the english word "condition".

Actually I just noticed a mistake…
"どんな相手だって私は" – she hasn't finished this sentence. Mogami is interrupting her.

It's actually meant to be something like

How did it get so bad? Seriously, even Ichimonji didn't end up like that. That's tough. Especially when it's 0-5.

 No.5947

Asano Yagura was absolutely merciless. No "Koyori was actually the first to play" fake-out. Hanabi's time to shine didn't come. Not even Kiruka and Munemune were spared. Suzumegahara crushed.

Very simple chapter to translate. Nevertheless, some notes:

>>5935
The chapter title is just "dokidoki shinai" (didn't dokidoki). I thought up poetic ways to go about it ("unracing heart", "heart left unraced") but I'll leave that choice up to typesetter-san.

>>5937
Satsuki says "we" and the furigana is "Suzumegahara"

>>5938
I noticed a typo and instantly noticed I mistranslated Mogami's line.

Mogami:
To provide a better ranking in the group stage, all five matches are taken in consideration.

A 5-0 win makes it clear you're in a class of your own

What a mess… My apologies.

>>5939
"Crawl back from this hole"

Mogami uses an expression that conveys that meaning. "To overcome a bad situation"

>>5941
Kuroba's line is more literally something like "That thing again today… Can you do it, please?"

"UZU…" can have multiple translations but going for something that conveys "itch" feels not ideal.

"It was my first time"[… "Seeing this brand of table tennis"]

>>5942
Koyori says "table tennis that doesn't dokidoki [her]"

I went for "dull brand of table tennis", but feel free to pick whatever you prefer.

>>5946
>Is she criticizing Kuroba's table tennis or her own, during the match? Or just the match itself?

Good question. Koyori's putting distance between her and the brand of table tennis she's crying about, so I assume it's Kuroba's. Even so, Koyori is all about making both her and her opponent feel the dokidoki, so if their hearts aren't syncing it could be an indictment of both her and her opponent's ability to make each other dokidoki.

My interpretation is based on >>5943 and >>5944 – Kuroba seems to be using the RPB. Notice she's returning Koyori's ball in much the same way as she did vs Juumonji ( >>4665 and >>4666 ) but Koyori manages to break through Kuroba's RPB in a shot that mimics her return of Agari's smash way back in the beginning of the manga. Since Kuroba's RPB is her trump card, I'm assuming she went for her secret technique that made her win the match (the one we haven't seen yet, alluded in >>5777 )

That secret technique can be the one that makes Kuroba's brand of table tennis so dull to Koyori's (but can is really when it mind-breaks five scorching takkyuu musume?).

>Asano Yagura was absolutely merciless. No "Koyori was actually the first to play" fake-out. Hanabi's time to shine didn't come. Not even Kiruka and Munemune were spared. Suzumegahara crushed.
Yeah, hopefully Suzumegahara doesn't play the idols again too soon. 1-4 would be possible to come back from. Agari making a comeback against Kumami's 11-1 was a bit of a reach but it was one match and already midway. Actually managing to win 3 matches when they just lost 5 will be a lot harder.

Hanabi is still the key, though. If she wins her first match, surely the others can get psyched up.

>That secret technique can be the one that makes Kuroba's brand of table tennis so dull to Koyori's (but can is really when it mind-breaks five scorching takkyuu musume?).

To be fair I assume it's the entire team swipe that did most of the mindbreak, but Koyori actually losing her dokidoki certainly didn't help.

We all thought Mozuyama would get idol'd first but our girls jobbed first. Surprising development.

I actually like the blunt simplicity of "My Heart Didn't Race" the most. It's mirroring her usual catchphrase to hammer in the despair of having it denied to her.

>I need us to do it

>that was my first time
You're doing this on purpose…

Dull is nice and concise, but if it's supposed to be referencing the title it might be better to go with "That was the first time / I'd ever seen / a brand of table tennis that didn't make my heart race…". So she's not really insulting the style but commenting on its (lack of) effect on her. Let me know if you think this would work better.

 No.5971

>>5970
>You're doing this on purpose…

>>I need us to do it

"Today, again, that… Can [you/we] do it?"

You can go for the usual "we need to use that" cliche if you'd like, but I feel my way flows better. Both people involved in the conversation know what it is. Maybe add in the "again" but I feel like that's redundant. Maybe something like "[I'm sorry,] could/can we do it again today [please]?"

>>that was my first time

Fine, I'll give you that one.

>"That was the first time / I'd ever seen / a brand of table tennis that didn't make my heart race…"

That can work.

>>5959
I was getting the heebie-jeebies for Mozuyama myself. They made it to the quarter finals in the nationals, right? I wonder how far they went in the previous city tournament. I can see them being runner-ups but that would imply they played Teikoku in the finals and Kururi lost, which seems unlikely considering Kururi's mindset when they met Suzumegahara (made it seem like Kururi hadn't lost a single game since meeting Zakuro).

Can't believe they offscreened the Ace. And now we've got to sit through another chapter of Dog. I guess the bright side is that Suzumegahara will probably need to sweep the next round to progress now, so the likelihood of more jobbing from anyone seems low.

RPB is not her trump card, it's her regular card. She uses it on opponents weak enough to have fun against, it's full of love and dokidoki.
Even her merciless and "dull" style of play, the reveal of which is being built up right now, is not her trump card as she's been using it in every match after chapter 0.
Her trump card is her "Driver of the South" playstyle that Mogami says she won't ever show (but narrative convention dictates that we WILL see it eventually, probably in the rematch after they both pass to the next stage of the competition)
