What're you already planning on watching? Anything that catches your eye?

Unfortunately the virus has made this season like half the size of what it was meant to be, so probably only fishing and Fruits Basket for me at first and maybe I'll pick up Kanojo and Uzaki-chan. Feels like a super weak season, at least partially because there's so little to choose from.

I was recently wondering when this thread would be up!
Last season I did end up finishing Listeners but ended up dropping Arte and Yesterday, should I pick Yesterday back up? I got really burned out of Arte so I don't think I'll return to that one.
Will this season's all-girls baseball anime be better than last season's?
I am already planning on watching Umayon because I like the horsegirls and do not know much about this season.
Any thoughts or insight on Gibiate, Deca-Dence, or Maou Gakuin? I'm going to avoid MAPPA for a bit after Listeners…

I watched basically nothing.
That said, I followed the manga for Dorohedoro for a long while. I have doubts about it being adapted but if they actually pulled it off well I'd love to check it out. And of course I liked Yuru Camp so Heya Camp would be a natural thing to check out.

Guess I'll get started. Deca-Dence didn't catch my eye in the summary since it looked like it was basically just a SnK ripoff, but it pleasantly surprised me. I never liked the gorn of SnK. That said, I can't tell if this is going to be mecha or not because of the last scene in the episode.

Oh Teibou Nisshi
Yeah I'm watching that one too, though it hasn't started airing yet. Weird how they're waiting so long.

Meow Meow Japanese history is an older show though I thought you were on about some new thing. It's decent for what it is, namely a cutesy way of reiterating Japanese history. Imagine teaching an outline of history to middle schoolers with some extra 'cool stories' thrown in and that's the level of depth to expect. It's fun and cute and the animation is fluffy, but that's about it; I wouldn't say it's especially exceptional.

S-sorry, ever since sama died I started posting on 4chins most of the time.
Anyways I've picked up so far:

-Maou Gakuin
-MonMusu Oishasan
-ReZero 2
-Deca-Dence
-Oregairu 3
-KanoKari
-Uzaki-chan
-Peter Grill
-Dokyuu HxEros

For me the weakest episodes so far have been the sequels as the past seasons stopped at weird points and they had awkward first episodes. Monster one seems to be the QUALITY show from what I've seen so far, along with Peter Grill, although the latter gets a pass for being from a small studio and it also explains the 12 mins length.
Deca-Dence could go either way, it had those great animated scenes with that ugly CGI, anyways interesting enough to recommend for now.
Dokyuu and Peter were a mess to follow with the multiple versions announced and airing at different times but everything seems to be smooth sailing from here on and everything else seems to have at least some effort put into it.
Ah yeah, and the only song I've liked somewhat is Maou Gakuin's OP.

I never started Enen no Shoubutai so Ni is out of the question, still have to finish the 4th season of Souma so Gou no Sara is out too and for SAO I only watched the second season out of duty although from what I remember from way back about novel spoilers and from what I've seen about the Alicization arc it seems like it got way better and interesting so I'm considering picking them up. It seems there's still at least one series left to pick from the season and with my current schedule even if I start watching Enen, Souma and SAO I don't think I will be able to catch up within this season given their length.

Still waiting on news about Gal to Kyouryuu too.

Which one? Deca-dence? Well it's an original so it definitely deserves a try at least, although it seems to be a mix of many genres and ideas slapped together and could go either way so it's too early to say. Maybe we'll get some era defining series, some comfy Gargantia-tier SoL or maybe it ends up being another Darling in the FranXX. The first episode was solid though.

>>615
It's a very straight power fantasy with a coat of the battle academy so if you could make it through the likes of Mahouka, Hagure Yuusha or even Isekai Smartphone you will probably like it and with battle academies already being rare some people seem to find it just enough to quench the desire for one so it's something to consider I guess. But they seem to be going at a fast pace so I'm just hoping they don't end up being Assassin's Pride-tier fast. And yes Misha is cute but the mother is better.

For Re:Zero I would say no if you couldn't make it past the first two arcs as they set the tone for what's to come, and it seems the entire season will cover just one big arc so it would be more of the same (or worse).

I'm a dumbass who appreciates spectacle and I imagine Re:Zero has insane budget. As for Mahouka, that was a power fantasy played so straight it turned into a comedy so I'm not sure it's fair to compare it to Isekai Smartphone.

Well if nothing else Uzaki's senpai also finds her insufferable a lot. Her voice is also kind of, I dunno, ear-wormy? I'm not sure if it's fair to pin that on her character since it's the VA doing the acting, but I think the producers probably know what they're doing and gave her a voice like that on purpose.

Uzaki's basically one of those girls that's cute to look at but if she actually clung to you like she does her senpai you'd get fed up with her really goddamn fast.

I'm gonna spout a ton of crap about anime and/or manga I haven't watched a second/read a single page of, so bear with me.

Things like Uzaki, Kaguya, Nagatoro and Maid Dragon (actually watched this one) feel very manufactured to me. It seems like the creator is trying really hard to please me but in a very insincere way, maybe even with disdain. Like they got a focus group in a room or lurked thousands of threads on 2ch to figure out what it is that otaku like, maybe even read the niconico encyclopedia to get some depth of knowledge. People that wear the otaku label like a backpack sticker (or ironic weebs or whatever the western equivalent might be) eat up these works immediately and forget about them soon after. Characters don't look like they have much more depth than the one their design betrays. The tsundere, the idiot, the loudmouth, the busty lovesick fool.

Compare the works I just talked about with something like Index. It's airing in the same time period but the source material is so detached from today's standards even I, who was never much of a fan outside the premise (and characters like Harumi and Frenda… Actually, railgun was alright… Accelerator and Kihara were funny too) even at a similar surface level, can see a depth, enthusiasm, a sincerity, however clumsy, that seems to completely evade something like Kaguya. Whatever little I've read or seen of Kaguya sounds like it could be condensed into the riajuu dialogue happening in the center of the classroom while the protagonist looks outside the window from his destined seat. Such-and-such did this and that, she's craazy! And did you see the nerd acting like a nerd? He's such a nerd! Hey, I think senpai might have a thing for you. I know, how about we go for karaoke after school so you get a little closer?! You think maybe MC-kun wants to come? – Don't bother with him, he's a little weird. And they all leave the classroom while the MC has a tastefully chuuni monologue about some secret society and a girl who doesn't like wearing panties falling on his lap from the sky.

Archetypes were as present a decade ago as they are today, but something feels like it's missing. I'm looking at these AI-created anime girls, at the same time as I think about how everything feels so distilled and fear for a time when AI actually write successful, award-winning anime based on data collected from all the suckers with MAL profiles. And then I despair.

I feel that Kaguya is an unfair target here because it actually has some insanely decent character development, especially in the first major arc (ending with Fireworks). As for the riajuu dialogue stuff, I think it's actually the opposite. Kaguya feels like a legitimate take on what happens when two people who want to seem aloof end up liking each other and the logic used by characters is very teenage. I don't think it's manufactured beyond the jokes being used.

As for Index, I think there's an argument to be made that the same sort of manufactured stuff is there as well. The difference is in whether that copy-pasted stuff is the main drive of the show, like in e.g. Uzaki, or it's garnish and/or a way to get readers interested enough to watch the first episode. It's all well and good if you write a literary masterpiece or build a clumsy but passionate world, but having fat tiddies and lolis involved makes it easy to get people to start reading it. Look at Index herself, she's pure fetish bait, and goddamn have you seen her legs?

I'm sure you didn't write this to have a bunch of weebs defend the specific shows you called out, but I feel compelled to defend Dragon Maid.

>Characters don't look like they have much more depth than the one their design betrays.

If you were looking at the double D dragons you were missing the real depth of the show which was Kobayashi. She's so logical she can't really see the need for anything outside of her programmer lifestyle, but her quiet character growth as she slowly realizes the value of this "found family" really affects me. I think the show explores what it means to be family in a unique and touching way. They're not together for the sake of starting a nuclear family and raising a child, they're not together for outward social appearance, they're not together out of romantic or sexual attraction (except in maybe Touru's case), so what are you left with? It's this very pure expression of what it means to be family. They're only together because of chance circumstance, and yet, slowly throughout the show, they come to a point when they can't imagine life without each other.

Started falling behind on some series a few weeks ago as I got hooked with a game. That said I haven't dropped anything and I'm still enjoying the season a lot.

So as the season went on I started liking some soundtracks, from the Rezero OP and ED, the Kanokari OP, the Dokyuu OP and ED, Peter Grill OP/ED and MonMusu's OP, thus I warmed up to pretty much everything it seems.

Interestingly enough the one suffering from the most QUALITY is Dokyuu HxEros, only surpassed by Peter Grill but that one is a short, so I guess most of their money went to the VAs. MonMusu on the other hand managed to survive what felt like one of the weaker first episodes and hasn't hit the bottom yet, in fact aside the CGI it manages to look pretty a lot of the times and it's of the ones up to date. Deca-dence is still really nice and it hits certain boxes that the others don't so I like it a lot.

Oregairu is pretty much Yui suffering-the season with some bones to others here and there, while ReZero is just a convoluted mess of stuff yet for some reason it's enjoyable. Maou has been consistent and delivers what it promised, KanoKari still has some nice shots and Amamiya Sora carries it hard and for Uzaki dunno, it's the first one that started lagging which I suppose means is the one I liked the least.
And it seems SAO got really interesting, too bad I'm way behind and barely started the GunGale Alternative series.

Stuff nobody cares aside I wanted to post some stuff just because.

It's been 2 actually. Chrono Trigger and Xenoblade Chronicles, fun stuff.

And Teibou didn't lure me in (heh) last season either, usually those shows are carried by the character designs and the theme but unlike Koisuru Asteroid which had geology and astronomy on the side fishing wasn't really that appealing to me overall so it was out.

There is this one I'm tempted to pick up as anime aimed for women usually have really attractive designs for their females and you could even self insert as 4 cool dudes if you wished to but not fully convinced yet, considering I'm falling behind on seasonals and the backlog is in danger too. Guess time will tell.

Those RPGs huh, always sucking the life out of people one way or the other it seems.
For fishing just be sure to select your fishing spot properly or you're have a really boring time, take note of whatever the teibous teach you about that.
Nice, another Deca-fren, will refrain from commenting about that as I'm behind by 1-2 episodes now but hopefully you're enjoying it too. Same with Oregairu for now.

I wouldn't say blasting it, I mean HxEros has the keyframes and to a certain extent the VAs (Kakuma Ai offsets whatever bad traits the main female character, Hoshino, could have at least for me) but it sometimes is lacking on the animation department and there are off model characters every once in a while plus the censorship (which after careful frame by frame analysis of episode 3 was all but confirmed to be decensored on the BD) so no wonder it's not wildly popular despite the ecchi. That said it's one of the series I have up to date so there's something pulling me back, I assume the mild ecchi-take it easy atmosphere it has plus the times where they do use some budget. So if at any point you decide to give it a try be sure to grab either the ATX-d-animestore ver. or wait a bit for the BDs.
