I'm doing a White Nuzlocke (with level caps).
I've only tried a Nuzlocke a couple times, but this is definitely the best I've done so far. Lilligant-chan is taking a break until after Skyla.

It's on cartridge so if I succeed I'll take my friends forward to the new generations. Well, the ones game freak has permitted…

Fun fact! Pokemon like Diglet were originally called "earth-type" pokemon. However, after extraterrestrial pokemon were discovered, the leading pokemon scientists changed the name to "ground-type" to avoid confusion with "Earth-type" (originating from the planet Earth) pokemon!

In gen 1 times sure, but back in the 14th/15th century when Hickory was developing his original Pokedex, there were all kinds of misconceptions about Pokemon. And going even farther back, alchemists used to insist that all Pokemon could be sorted into just 4 types! (there was a notable subset of alchemists who pushed a 5th type but they were branded as heretics by mainstream alchemy). Thanks to Hickory's experiments we were able to come to a better understanding of Pokemon types, but in modern times we know there were flaws in his methods. One of the most significant flaws was conflating what we now know to be distinct ground and rock types into a single type that he called earth-type. Because most common rock-type Pokemon known at the time were also ground-type, it was hard to tell them apart. It wasn't really until the invention of the gas chromatograph that we were able to divide them into two categories. Even then, the earth-type label was retained for what became ground-type Pokemon for decades until space-type Pokemon were better understood.

>How is that nuzlocke going?
I don't wanna talk about it…

I got to the elite four, looking at what pokemon I had, I got together the 6 that I felt gave me the best shot. At least without training everything up to see where its stats landed (or using a calculator).
I made a rule not to look up opponents teams, but since I knew it was limited to gen 5 pokemon, I knew their types, and I knew they couldn't be above level 50 (since that was my level cap), I was able to make a really educated guess at their teams.
I thought I would just barely make it, and maybe I could have with better luck.
I went against Grimsley first since his scrafty (which I assumed he'd have due to the lack of many other dark types) would really problematic for me, what I didn't expect is that he would have a level 50 bisharp (which is usually impossible, as it evolves at level 52), nor did I expect his Krookodile would be so fast. Both of those things caused big problems, so I ended up losing to him.
The other 3 would definitely be doable with decent luck, I had things that could sweep their teams.

I wont be restarting White, at least not for a long time, but I might start another game as there are several I haven't played. I am really determined to eventually succeed a run on cartridge with all my additional rules. It's been quite a fun journey already!
I think my strategy will have to change to think more long-term. Like potentially keep all my pokemon trained rather than just 6 or 7, and maybe even try to focus on EVs as I go by running from encounters with useless EVs.

I also need to set my rules a little more clearly about what is ok to look up and what isn't. Since I realized I could technically have sat and looked through the opponents movepools and compared stats and stuff for hours to plan better- but that doesn't feel right.

Yeah I agree.
But I do feel like being able to look up things like "how much does expert belt actually increase damage by" lets me have more fun strategizing, so there's kind of a blurry line.
I think I'll do "I'm allowed to look up info about pokemon (and items) I own, but not ones I don't".

I see… Well, I was always more of a guy who believes pressing B+UP at the right moment will increase everything and it all depends on my strength of will. I never paid much attention to stats outside levels and pokemon types. Outside protect faints, stuff like double team, swords dance, light screen, etc. felt like a waste of a turn. Looking ahead always involved using thinder wave, toxic and maaaybe confuse ray (whose success rate, both connecting and the effect, never totally convinced me).

>I felt Alpha Sapphire was a worse experience than if I had just went back and played Emerald.

Having listened to the HGSS soundtracks, I was left feeling the same way you feel about the RSE remakes. A gameboy cartridge of GSC is not entirely practical though, since they have internal clock batteries which will kill your save data the moment they run out. I'll never forget it died on me the exact day before I evolved my pupitar into a tyranitar. It was the final challenge I imposed on myself and it just died right before I got it done…

A level capped nuzlocke would surely be impossible without boosting moves or some sort of set up. Tracking stats is also vital.
You can get through the game regularly by pressing A with your starter of course, but the whole point of these challenge runs is that it makes you think about it deeper.

Yeah you can! The reason why I quit pokemon after GSC (besides the ridiculous total number of pokemon, growing up and having unbeatable memories with friends of RBY/GSC) was because the soundtrack in RSE bored me out of my skull. It was the closest thing to 16 bit elevator music I've ever heard. If I don't feel like I'm on an adventure or an epic journey, there's no point in playing these games.

HOWEVER…

>A level capped nuzlocke would surely be impossible without boosting moves or some sort of set up. Tracking stats is also vital.

>You can get through the game regularly by pressing A with your starter of course, but the whole point of these challenge runs is that it makes you think about it deeper.

Is this some kind of challenge? Because I got in the mood to make a hardcore survival run after reading this.

I was reading the nuzlocke rules and it should fit:
1 - Capture the first pokemon you find on a new route (not applicable if the first pokemon you encounter has already been caught AKA the rattata clause). This counts for towns as well (AKA the celadon poliwag-eevee clause).
2 - Every town you visit gives you the right to use a pokemon center twice "for free" (stackable). Sleep at home and beds count as a pkmn center use. Beating a gym gives you two more uses.
3 - Pokemon stadium level caps (early game pika cup, mid game petit cup, late game poke cup + 1 lvl60)
4 - Every other pokemon center use is exclusively to restore move PP (must fully heal and clear SLP/PAR/FRZ/PSN with potions before using the pkmn center)
5 - "Set" battle mode
6 - Fainted pokemon can't be used ever again
7 - Losing the first rival battle is mandatory
– Adding the nickname rule to this
– No walkthroughs/wikis! No cheats/bugs! (I might have to adapt the pokemon center and level cap rules since these are all for RBY, which was a solved game at that point)
– And I won't care about stats and attack everything when in doubt.

I think I'm gonna go ahead with this. Is there anything in this that doesn't abide by nuzlocke rules?

The original nuzlocke rules are just
>permadeath
>can only catch first encounter of each location
>nickname everything
The main point is to make you get attached to your team, unexpectedly find a new friend.

Level cap is
>you can not use a pokemon that is higher level than the next gym leader's (or e4/champion/whatever) highest level pokemon
i.e. Candice has a level 44 Froslass, so you aren't allowed to level anything above 44 yourself until you beat her. You could have a team of 6 level 44s though.
I've never seen the "cup" model before myself.

Regardless of if its a nuzlocke or not I play with
>set mode
>no items in battle
I think those are pretty universal for nuzlockes.

I personally also use
>skip all duplicates (based on final evo)
>shines are always catchable
>no legendaries
>other gift/event pokemon are ok, they count for the location obtained in

I don't like the idea of limited pokemon center visits myself, but I've never tried it.
I don't really get the point. If you can still restore PP at the pokemon center, you can still easily grind forever. And at least in the newer games there's plenty of ways to make money and get as many potions as you need. Maybe it makes more sense for RBY though, I have played gen 1 but not as a nuzlocke.

I decided I'm going for it. I'm keeping all the rules but I'm conflicted about the no items rule. I'll cross that bridge when I have to.

I'm going to do pokemon platinum because I heard this generation introduced a nice pair of innovations as far as gameplay enjoyment is concerned.

I've already gone to the retail store online and bought me a copy of the game. I got the japanese version to test myself. I'll be posting some pics ITT to document the playthrough.

Picked my name, my dumbass rival's name (they don't give you a lot of letter space, do they), set up the right settings (that message box… Aah, much better…) and my starter. My very first piece of information about this game (outside the innovations) came from the opening movie which shows all the evolved starter pokemon and this is the one that looks the most badass and reminds me of Venusaur, so it was a sure pick. Naetoru
it is. The name is a portmanteau of seed and turtle maybe?… Wondering if the localized name is something like Seedtle.

Speaking of, I already have a better feeling about this game than RSE from the opening movie alone. Nice music (although with a little bit too much flair).

I forgot to take pics because it was very aggravating, but my dumbass rival was so stupid in our first battle that it was a challenge in and of itself to throw the battle. I used up all my DEF-UP move and he kept spamming tail whip instead of attacking. I had his pokemon at red HP before he fainted mine. What a total dumbass. He's a huge hyperactive spaz too. I absolutely despise people like that.

>>6691
>I don't really get the point. If you can still restore PP at the pokemon center, you can still easily grind forever.

It's not so much about grinding but about limiting chances of recovery. Originally, PP would have been restored using items as well but we realized viridian and pewter city doesn't sell elixirs (and if my memory isn't failing me, I think it was a limited item you found in the wild…), so it got scrapped. If you're spending so much money recovering the pokemon to full health without status effects, you already earned the pokemon center visit, essentially.

My first sigh of relief was getting the pidgey equivalent as my first pokemon encounter instead of the rattata equivalent. I got to the second town (+2 pokemon center visits) and did all the story stuff that was required of me (Hikari coming on to me pretty strong). Turns out, the mom event triggers AFTER she puts you to sleep so I lost a center visit right then and there… Thank goodness for the running shoes, because this game ran like molasses without it. But what purpose do running shoes have in the first place? Why not make the character walk at this pace from the beginning?

I also got the opportunity to set my starter's nickname. Made it a pun on Blastoise's japanese name. カメックサ - Kamekkusa. I hope he learns stun spore. For ease of writing, I'll be calling him Grasstoise in here.

Good man gave me a free potion, accounting for my second sigh of relief of this playthrough.

Then I went and bought a ton of potions, antidotes and 3 pokeballs. I'll have to make them count. I immediately caught the pidgey equivalent and named him クッキー - Cookie. It happened to be at Lvl2. It had to. I spent some time grinding him up to Lvl4, using some potions along the way.

Grasstoise is down to 6 moves on his Tackle and Cookie was very low HP. I decided it was time to travel to the next town, so I gave them potions and was just about to get their moves restored at the pokemon center when… I realize Grasstoise is not at full HP by ONE POINT. I have only one more potion left and no money to buy any more.

My options are to travel on depending on a Lvl4 Cookie and 6 Grasstoise tackles with one potion on backup, or use the potion now, get Grasstoise's movement points restored at the poke center. In either case, if the path to the next town is too long and I'm very unlucky in trainer battles which are sure to come, this could be an early game-over.

Pkmn center uses left: 3
Available budget: 260円

New vocab:
- Mukoumizu (向こう見ず)
- Zukan (図鑑)

These updates are fun! I wish you luck.
You've made a critical error by not playing as Hikari but I'll forgive you.

The lack of half-spaced characters is a travesty, I played a couple games in Japanese (though I mostly just skipped dialogue) and the character limit kept getting me.

While I've never tried, I'm sure there are ways to farm money in platinum.

>I'm conflicted about the no items rule.

Perhaps it'll be different if budgeting is such a key element of your run, but in normal pokemon you can cheese almost any battle by spamming healing items. For instance if you have a bulky pokemon, you can heal until the opponent misses or uses a stupid move or runs out of pp or an ability/item triggers. Status effects become irrelevant. And you can always just switch to something bulky to heal whatever you switched out. If you get sturdy or a focus sash, it gets even more broken.
I think in-battle items are a bad mechanic even in the base game.
But it seems like you've got enough of a challenge going on already! I'm really curious how your ruleset will play out.

Did you decide to keep the "cup" level cap idea? What is the exact restriction?

In the end, I decided to use the potion and visit the poke center. On my way out of town, I bump into Hikari and she "teaches" me how to catch pokemon even though I already caught one (is she coming on to me?). She gives me 5 pokeballs but I caught nothing because I forgot the first encounter-first catch rule and downed a Bippa (rattata equivalent) for XP. Even worse, this pokemon didn't mess around. Thankfully, Cookie lvl'd up (Lvl5), recovering some HP and learning a new move. でんこうせっか… Denkou made me think of electricity, but it's a normal type move. Probably "flash" as in "quick attack?"

As expected, I got into trainer battles and this guy had to have a Mukkuru (same as Cookie) at Lvl5. I still have to test whether this move is indeed quick attack, but it does more damage than tackle at least. Cookie was on the ropes so I had switch to Grasstoise. Any regret for using that potion vanished. The battle got me 80円 (only 80円?!) which put me at enough money to get another potion. After some consideration, I decided to sell 3 pokeballs (100円 each) I got from Hikari to go for another potion. Grinded with Cookie to put him at Lvl6 so as to not depend on Grasstoise so much and it only took one encounter. I seem to have bad luck on encounters with Cookie, since it's always upper level pokemon. Got him to Lvl7 but he almost died on the second trainer battle. I had to switch to Grasstoise, who upped another level and learned absorb, making my life so much easier!… For now. I'm hoping the first gym leader is more of a Brock and less of a Falkner.

There's a potion at the end of the route, which I used on Cookie right away and began grinding. Just like that, the Lvl2 Mukkurus and Lvl3 Bippas I was getting with Grasstoise all upped two levels each. Luckily, Cookie levels up fast. I got him to Lvl9 and he learned another move, つばさでうつ, a flying-type move… Tsubasa… There's NO WAY he learns wing attack this early in the game.

Finally at Kotobuki city (+2 poke center uses) and Hikari runs into me by "coincidence" (coming on to me pretty strong). We run into a cop immediately afterwards (SHE'S the one putting the moves on me though?!) and Hikari tells me about pokemon school. My gut instinct (expert detective) tells me there's trainer battles within so I decided to grind Cookie and Grasstoise one more level (to lvl10) before going in. I don't know whether or not it's wing attack, but this new move does crazy damage. Lvling up was a breeze.

Checked out the mart to see if I could buy any potions but my fight money wasn't enough. That's when I see these heal balls (they heal captured pokemon to full HP) and decide to sell my pokeball stock and buy as many as I can (after getting potions). I blow all my finances on… One potion and one heal ball…

I enter the school and the dumbass rival is there as Hikari so warned me. Talking to him is useful for once as the parcel his mom told me to give him had a map for me. Dumbass says the next town is Kurogane city. Black metal…? If the first gym is steel and/or dark type I'm toast. Surely they don't make early gyms with combos of these novel types!

The school has trainers to fight as I suspected (expert detective). Intimidated at first but Cookie insta-killed the girl's lvl6 pokemon and the teacher didn't even get to attack, preoccupied as he was using items. No damage suffered and got a potion for my troubles!

I can't leave town without a poke watch so I finish the side quest while rummaging through all the trash to find anything useful (it was nothing but trash). After getting the poke watch I realize there's an area to the north and another to the east that I can explore. To the east I get an old rod which I don't use on the nearby body of water because I can't afford to grind a Magikarp on my current condition (plus I bet this is one of those places along with the lake on the starter town where you get awesome pokemon if you come back with a super rod).

To the north there's more trainers and more grass, so I picked up my second pokemon, a Bippa. It was stressful considering the Lvl difference between cookie and her, but I managed to not kill her. Nicknamed her Hanecchi. I took her out to grind against a Mukkuru at the same level WHICH KILLED HER IN THREE MOVES.

Namu… I was so aggravated I forgot to take a pic. There's not even a PC to release her so I'll have to carry her around until I find one. Sousou no Hanecchi…

With no pokeballs in my inventory, I went back, sold all antidotes but one. Added to my fight money, it was enough to get me two heal balls… Let's hope things go smoother next time.

And just as I leave town headed east my DUMBASS RIVAL challenges me to a fight. Couldn't have come at a better time… Thankfully he's not learned a thing since our first fight and continues to spam status altering attacks instead of dealing any damage. Cookie got the better of him and is now 2lvls above Grasstoise at Lvl12. At least he dropped 900円, so I bought 1 more heal ball (300円 each) and 2 more potions.

New route, new pokemon to capture. Or not, because it was an Abra which immediately teleported away after a desperate catch attempt failed. What a waste of a heal ball…

Trainer battles are a box of surprises. One almost downs my Grasstoise with what I assume was bide, another does nothing and allows me to recover what remained to recover of Grasstoise's health after using a potion on him (I did not expect to use potions on Grasstoise this soon after learning absorb…)

Meanwhile, Grasstoise lvld up to 13 and learned what seems to be razor leaf (はっぱカッタ, leaf cutter)… Already?!

The way to Kurogane city is through a cave and contrary to expectations I'm hoping for a zubat. Crobat is one of my fave pokemon so I want it in my team. Right there on the spot a nobody hiker high on his horse gave me a lecture about me being a novice trainer. Kid, I was the greatest pokemon master IN MY CITY before anyone even envisioned the hardware you're coded on. He gives me an HM06 for the trouble of putting up with him but I know it's a poisoned apple since I can't use HMs without beating gyms.

After that ordeal, the first pokemon I encounter is… Psyduck?! This early?! I remember this being a late game pokemon back in the day. What the hell? It might be a blessing in disguise because I remember water is at least better than normal, grass and flying against steel.. And psychic is a badass move to have. Golduck is pretty awesome too. Great pokemon stadium cry and very intimidating. It was another stressful affair as I was afraid to kill him. Nicknamed Kuakunai. Unafraid I carry on.

A couple of trainer battles later and on the other side of the cave, I finally reach Kurogane city, "a city overflowing with energy"… An electric-type gym then?

Made it out of the cave and into Kurogane city. And here I finish my sess- oh I can't believe this. Another unskippable cutscene? Do I look so stupid I don't know how to get to the gym? And speaking of stupid, here's my dumbass rival yet again. The gym leader is out so I'll have to go look for him. On an expedition in a cave, welling up my hopes for a pushover rock type gym.

>Did you decide to keep the "cup" level cap idea? What is the exact restriction?

This was all things me and friends came up with to make pokemon RBY feel fresh again back in the day. Essentially:

Pika cup (15-20) - Brock, Misty, Surge
Petit cup (25-30) - Erika only
Pre-poke cup (Up to lvl 45) - Koga, Sabrinna, Blaine, Giovanni
Poke cup (up to lvl55) + 1 lvl60 - Elite 4 + champion.

Important note: these are the levels the pokemon have to be at when they enter the venue. If you challenge Misty with lvl20 pokemon and they lvl up halfway through, you can still use them until the end of the gym. However, once you battle the first trainer, you can't get out until you beat the gym leader (and you have to battle all trainers before the leader). You won't be able to use those pokemon against Surge.

This is doable, at least if you save enough money to max up speed with that item that permanently improves it.

All these rules were decided based on what we knew about RBY (everything) and I'm diving into pearl blind. I'm going to try to stick with these rules, but I probably won't make it past the elite 4 AT BEST. Back in RBY the elite 4 had plenty of pokemon in the late 50s/early 60s but their movesets were so unoptimized I could get past Lorelei with a Rhydon. I assume they've fixed that.

>>6696
>Hold on a second!
>If that's your first encounter on the left, why is Cookie a boy!?

In the context of the story, I could only buy pokeballs after going through the first route without them. My first encounter was with a Mukkuru but I had no pokeballs since they were not yet available. Thinking back, maybe that means only the first encounter after unlocking pokeballs counts. Thankfully that was still Mukkuru. However, if it means I can't catch pokemon in the first route at all, I might have to start over. Which is kind of bittersweet since I'll be redoing this first part knowing what to expect.

I leave it to the nuzlocke expert sushi among us to decide…

Ah my bad, you're fine.
Usually people just only start the nuzlocke after you get a pokeball, so it would be the first encounter after that- but either way is fine, no need to worry.

As far as what certain moves are in english and how gen 4 mechanics work (because it's really different than what you're used to) do you want tips and stuff or are you enjoying being totally blind?

Minor correction: I have 7 poke center visits available (+2 for reaching Kurogane city)

I'm going to explore first. This session is going to focus solely on this town and the gym.

The town:
Speaking with everyone, I learned this is a rock-type gym, making my sigh deep and my relief immense. I was gifted a dark ball (better catch chance in dark places) and a great ball (everyone loves me). Some guy wants to trade for a ワンキー (wankii), another wants to see a pokemon called イシツブテ (ishitsubute). I later realize it's geodude. I also learn the gym leader thinks he's hot shit since he's "known" as The Rock around these parts (there's ALWAYS a guy like this).

I was quizzed about my favorite trainer type at the pokemon center. Being an elite trainer, I chose myself. This lovely dame then outs herself as an excelent judge of character saying I must look exactly like that to other people. I don't just look it, I AM it!

Speaking with some more people around town helps me realize たんこう (tankou) doesn't stand for "prospection", it means "coal mine". At least I'm told in the science department that I should train my pokemon at the tankou… The very same department tells me they took every environmental precaution and use only machines to extract the coal they get rich from. In the museum next door, a little girl comments how the pokemon who carry the coal must be so strong while an old timer tells me the history of the mine, which I learn extends underwater, is one of friendship between man and pokemon. Also fossils (kabutops hope).

Before looking for the gym leader, I decide I gotta have Kwak at least at lvl12, but I gotta manage Cookie's and Grasstoise's levels. If their lvls get too high too quick, I incur the risk of benching them. It wouldn't be my first time solo-ing a rock-type gym, but I'd rather avoid putting myself in that situation. Kwak has to become independent as soon as possible, but he seems to lvl up pretty slowly. Learning a water-type move would be nice…

The grind was a mess. I always had the worst luck with the confusion status effect. When I use it, it only seems to work 30% of the time, but when it's used against me it's almost 90%. Cookie almost fainted to a Lvl5 zubat(!) by hitting himself. Stop scaring me so often, Cookie-chan!

It wouldn't be too problematic for me to use the poke center with the amount of uses I have, but at the same time I don't want to disrespect Hanecchi. I settled for a potion on Cookie and, as Kwak reaches level 9, he wants to learn a new move… みずてっぽう… Mizuteppou! Water gun! Maybe! The same encounter that lvls up Kwak also levels up Cookie and he too wants to learn another move! He already has 4 and this is where I learn you can now see descriptions for what the moves do (in RBY you had to hope for the best when you ran into a new one – a friend overwrote psychic with mist on his mewtwo because he learns it at such a high level, we all thought it had to be THE killer move). かげぶんしん (Kagebunshin)… Double team? I put it in and remove なきごえ (nakigoe - growl?). Not like either will be of much use considering I'm playing old school pokemon master style.

I decide to get Kwak to Lvl10 before trying him out on his own, but a geodude pops up right after, which I down with a risky water gun. Neat! Kwak is faster and 1HKOs geodudes with water gun. Less encounters to switch Grasstoise in! And just as I'm thanking my lucky stars, confusion does another number on Cookie. Against better judgement, I throw half-HP Kwak at a Lvl5 zubat and… Kwak gets Lvl10 at last!

It's then I decide to explore the pokemon center while contemplating Hanecchi. I end up figuring out where the PCs are. The box directory is even named "Someone's PC" like old times! Unlike old times however, there's no potion snuck in my directory. Here you go, Hanecchi. I'll be keeping you here. Our journey together was short but traumatic. Namu…

After using the pokemon center for the first (intentional) time, I let Kwakunai out into the world. Things go ok until I accidentally use water dance (not the first time), he gets hit by confusion and hits himself twice in a row (WTF!)… I have to leave psyducks and zubats to Cookie, yet again. Grasstoise is at lvl14 and I don't want to risk getting his lvl any higher.

Cookie also reaches this borderline while Kwak remains a pixel away from Lvl12 and a couple more from fainting, which– what's this? Evolution! Congrats, Cookie! I let Cookie eat a couple more EXP to get Kwak over the line and head back to the poke center for my second visit, after which I'll head to the coal mine. But not before exploring the museum out of curiosity and not because I have cold feet or anything. Us elite trainers are strangers to fear. We are, however, familiar with the power of possibility.

There's a couple of items scattered about before the mine's entrance: a criticutter (improves crit chance if used during battle) and a yellow fragment. I have no idea what it is but it's yellow, so it matches Kwak, so he gets to hold it.

Finally in the mine. New area, which means new pokemon… Which yet again is not a zubat. Cookie almost downs this Lvl8 geodude with a critical hit tackle and I catch him with my last heal ball, making him ready for the big time right then and there. Nicknamed him Ishigoro (Rockroll) because of pokemon stadium graveler trauma and the pun gained in translation.

I keep near the entrance to grind a little Exp for Ishigoro (want him at least at Lvl10) and it's mostly geodudes which Kwak one-shots with water gun. He reaches Lvl13 and, realizing this is not the most productive way to get Ishigoro where I want him, I decide to relocate to the grass patches before Kurogane tunnel. Right as I'm leaving, a zubat finally shows up and I leave it to Rock roll, who becomes confused and hits himself twice in a row, twice in a row (SEE WHAT I MEAN?!)… Another potion down the hatch.

At the grassy patches, I'm faced with a repel in a small area I hadn't explored, as well as with the reality that Ishigoro's only damage-dealing attack (tackle) is down to 3PP by the time he hits Lvl10. All his other attacks are stat-altering trash and I was expecting him to learn something before it came to this. Out of options, I try the HM on him and it works! Miracle! It's a pretty strong move too, but only has 15pp… But Lvl11 brings with it a new move! いわおとし… Rock throw? Nice! Again only 15pp but it 1HKO's almost everything and gets me where I need to be.

Considering my desperate lack of PP and the fact I don't have enough potions to restore all my pokemon to full health, I resign myself to a third visit to the poke center, which I schedule for after finding the gym leader in the coal mine. Kwak takes over since he has the mines on lock with his finger on the trigger of his water gun.

I talk with the miners on B1F and learn where to find a machop (route 207 – north of Kurogane – catchable!). Hoping for more info, I talk to another miner and it turns into a battle. Then I find a potion and the gym leader. That was fast! Sure enough, he seems like a dork. Meanwhile, Kwak wants to learn yet another move (nice!). かなしばり (Kanashibari)… Says it stops the opponent's action and temporarily disables the move the it was going to use. Seems useful enough so I put it in over しっぽをふる (tail whip?).

The final item in the area is an escape rope (あなぬけのヒモ, pretty straighforward). I never used these (or repel for that matter) and I just noticed these battles netted me a modest amount of cash, so I might not have to use the poke center after all. Potions it is!

Right as I leave the mine, a final zubat encounter puts Grasstoise at Lvl15. Enough for the first gym, but… Level management coming soon…

After selling all the X-trash, escape rope and repel, I have enough money to spend half of it on 5 potions! I'll capture Machop before getting to the gym but no heal balls this time. I've got a great ball on me so I'll be using that if I'm lucky enough to get him. There's also a net balls (for pokemon found in water) for sale, but it's too early for that.

This is when I notice how long I've been playing. Almost two hours?! I'm stopping the session here before going to the gym, but first I'm checking out that machop.

I get to route 207, take a deep breath and proceed undistracted by whatever that thing is to the right. Machop please come…

I make it all the way to the other end of the area without a single pokemon encounter and get a pokeball for my troubles. Suspense…

Finally an encounter!
…It's a geodude.
The rattata clause says this encounter doesn't count. I'll catch whatever unique comes out first and check the nuzlocke rules in more detail later.

Second encounter is a machop! Lvl5… Not downing her will be a challenge… I use one of Rockroll's last tackles and dare no further. Great ball time. This is the one that if you press B-UP at the right time you're guaranteed a catch. It worked, as always!

Nicknaming her ナンシー (Nancy). Welcome aboard!… I think.

I get to healing Nancy and we head out to grind. Cookie and Kwak are at Lvl14, so I leave it to Ishigoro (Lvl12). Nancy's only offense is けたぐり (low kick?), which I remember as a passable low/mid level move, but disappoints against anything that isn't a Bippa (WHAT?!)… Worse, Nancy's speed is surpassed even by Lvl4 Mukkurus, making me switch to Ishigoro a lot. コリンク (Korinku) in particular intimidates me. I can't tell his type for sure. The tail makes me think electric. His crit chance is much above average and it doesn't help Nancy is intimidated even by Lvl4s.

Thankfully, Nancy seems to lvl up relatively quickly and soon enough she learns a new move! きあいだめ (Kiaidame)… From the looks of it, it's something like focus energy… Oh well.

Ishigoro is finally all out of attacks. I could use potions to get everyone at full HP (leaving me only one) and use the poke center for free, or save potions (and money) and use a pokemon center visit. I decide to save money. I have no idea what's coming in the near future, so I'll need to be thrifty for a while.

Having 35 tackles on Ishigoro is a relief but I'm perplexed that Lvl7 Mukkurus are quick enough to outpace him at Lvl13…Nancy jumps to Lvl10 and learns a move I don't have to think too hard to figure out. からてチョップ (karate chop)! I know for sure this is a good low/mid level move! The jump to Lvl15 happens so quick that, if I knew she was so close to learning karate chop, I would have saved myself the pkmn center visit and toughed it out with Kwak. She also learned みやぶる (miyaburu… see through?) along the way, which seems at least more useful than leer.

I relocate to Machop route (remaining unperturbed about whatever that is to the right) to grind the rest of my team as there's stronger pokemon there. Right away, I face a PONYTA… Man this SUCKS! It's one of my faves and I can't catch it… I start encountering ponytas with increasing frequency as if the game is messing with me. I check the pokedex and realize I'll have only one more try to catch it. They used to be dime a dozen in Cinnabar island… If I fail, I hope at least I'll be able to get a zubat (surprisingly elusive so far) and a magnemite.

Ishigoro is the last to reach Lvl15 and is rewarded with a new move. マグニチュード (magnitude)! I have fond memories of this move, so it's not even a challenge. Doroasobi (どろあそび - play in the mud?) is OUT! I go for pkmn center visit (down to 3 uses) instead of potions.

It's almost gym time and there's decisions to make. Whoever goes first will be the most exposed but will earn the most XP. I'm counting on getting no pokemon past Lvl16. Thinking simple never failed me: Grasstoise will be my ACE as he's sure to sweep it, followed by Kwakunai who's a nice backup in case there's a fiery or steely surprise ahead. Finally, Nancy is the last line of defense (fighting is effective against rock - confirmed earlier). Ishigoro will sit this one out and poor Cookie is not a good fit for this gym.

It's time.
And it's "Yo, champ in making" guy! Long time no see, old friend. And just like back then, my rival beat me to the punch, but this dumbass spaz can't compare to the charismatic achiever who was so much like me.

I scout as far as I can and confirm it's two trainers plus the leader. The first trainer gets all sassy asking me why I didn't skip his fight. His only pokemon, a Lvl11 geodude, goes down with one absorb. Second trainer two: a Lvl9 geodude (1HKO'd) and a Lvl9 onyx. He attacks first but is downed with one absorb, returning all HP and raising Grasstoise to Lvl16.

The leader probably has 3 pokemon and likely something in the late 10s. If Grasstoise does it alone, he could reach upwards of late Lvl17, which would condition his use going forward. But what if it's only one pokemon at a high level? In the end, I switch in Nancy to feel things out. She seems slower, but she has good defense, high HP and a type advantage. And unfortunately for Nancy, I'm more afraid of losing Kwak than I am of losing her…

This dork, Hyouta, doesn't look intimidating in the slightest (wears glasses?!), but he wouldn't be here if he's not a cut above the rest. He's got three pokemon, beginning with a Lvl12 geodude. I worry: is he supposed to be the type to have a (relatively) big party with similar levels, or will it build up to the final pokemon?

Nancy surprises with a quick karate chop that almost does in geodude. Hyouta answers with some status altering move and a potion. Next comes out ズガイドス (Zugaidosu). Lvl14 and a color scheme that hints at something more than rock… Is this the rock/steel pokemon I feared? Maybe Kwak was the best choice after all…

I fear for the worst as Zugaidosu is first to attack, even though he doesn't deal too much damage. Nancy's karate chop breaks through all my worries, downing zugaidosu in a single hit! And that was his strongest pokemon, because out comes a Lvl12 Onyx! I consider swapping Kwak in for the XP, but Nancy is so close to Lvl16 (and probably won't be as useful in the next gym), so I let her take the glory (also onyx could have explosion…).

Battle won! Hyouta admits he's a weak dork, hands over the coal badge (is he playing Santa?!), 1680円 and TM76 (ステルスロック - stealth rock? I think I've heard about it…). I also earn two more pokemon center uses! I can now use rock smash outside battles and know at least two places where I can do that. I have my sights locked on the first place I'll try but, before that, I need to make sure of something.

I knew it! It wasn't just a one-off line. Show a geodude to this guy and he reacts! I kept forgetting about this during the previous session. The sight of my Ishigoro motivates him to go out on his pokemon journey, but not before giving me a heal ball! There's also a chick who wants to trade a Machop but won't even tell me what she has. I'm very curious but not only am I afraid of triggering a trade, there's no way I'm giving Nancy away after that superstar performance. I heal Nancy to full health so I can use the pokemon center to recover PP for free. I'm down to 4 potions.

And that's where I end today's session. I've got enough money I could comfortably spend on potions and a decently leveled team. Things are looking up!

Pkmn center uses available: 5
Current budget: 3797円

New vocab:
- Ketaguri (蹴手繰り)
- Miyaburu (見破る)
- Toomawari (遠回り)

You (and anyone really) can also comment on the aftermath of bigger events (quests, gyms) on what I could have done to save myself some trouble I might have gone through or even your own experiences during that part of your run.

And if anyone else is doing runs, I'd love to hear about them.
I'm grateful you guys are enjoying the read and encouraging me to post more, but it'd be nice if this thread didn't become all about my run.

>Torterra is the one you saw in the intro, you still have a little Turtwig!

Oh, okay. Torterra does sound too badass for a stage 1 pokemon, but he's learning razor leaf at Lvl13 so I don't know anymore. What happened to vine whip?

>Sinnoh is Hokkaido, interesting vocab!

Hokkaido… No wonder everyone is so tall!
I often bump into this region when I come across anything japan-related. I've become curious to visit it more than any other place in japan.

Looks like my platinum adventure log killed the thread.

For me, nothing in video games will ever come close to the feeling of max comfiness I got while playing gen 4, gen 2, and Pikmin 2
Top tier games
