We Enabled reCAPTCHA

So, yeah. It has come to this. Sorry everyone.

Even after adding multiple new janitors, getting one or more CP spam posts per day was just, still too much. It limits who will even be willing to visit my imageboards in a possibly traumatic way, and having it appear so often puts me at legal risk.

Even being desensitized from dealing with this so long, some of the more recent images were especially disturbing to me. I'd rather force my users to fill out a captcha than force my users and janitors to look at this shit all the time. I got it working and it's gonna be here to stay until I can think of something better.

I realize that Google's solution is not the best solution, but it's what ships with Vichan. At least one user reported that reCAPTCHA blocks their entire ISP, but they were able to get around that by enabling the uBlock Origin browser extension, strangely enough. If I can get the software updated there is an alternate provider, but there are issues with that such that it is going to end up being a major surgery I have to set aside some hours for.

I have the captcha set at the lowest difficulty setting for now. If you are having trouble posting regardless, you can report it to me at seisatsu@uboachan.net, though I can't guarantee I can do anything.

I'm sorry again that I had to do this, and I hope it doesn't significantly impact the experience for most people.

R: 42 / I: 2
back in the day i was a heavy 4chan user, maybe around 2009 or so. I was younger and dumber but I miss that environment. The image board culture is one I miss and wish I could immerse myself in again.

I browse sushigirls occasionally but honestly I can't quite nail down if I am "welcome" here.

I'm a smelly commie, I'm a trans woman, im a furry piece of shit, and frankly I can't tell if this board is a "we're all bigots but want a good face so we dont let each other talk about it" or a genuinely safe place with a few hateful weirdos sprinkled in as a minority.

where exactly does this website fall on the "these people want me dead" scale? i love the environment but I cant tell if sticking around here would require me to accept that the people im talking to want me to die or not.

I highly recommend using cloudflare's csam scanning tool to stop illegal images from appearing on your site. It also helps to block proxies as well. I think as an imageboard community we can stop this shit but we need to start taking measures to put an end to it. If you want to step away from your board for awhile don't leave posting open. It will get spammed. Just put it in read only until you come back.

And yes, I'm posting this on all the imageboards I find. No I'm not a bot.

IRC vs Discord

I've noticed that IRC has been pretty dead as of late, while the activity on the boards has remained fairly constant. I feel like this is due to IRC quickly becoming a niche thing. My other imageboard Uboachan switched to Discord some years back and the chat has been explosively active ever since. So, I am wondering if anyone still prefers IRC, or if we ought to try moving to Discord and see how that works out. Thoughts?

What Happened? Raid on 10/04/2021

Hello Sushis,

We suffered a raid directed from another imageboard on 10/04/2021. It looks like many smaller imageboards were attacked, and the stated goal of the attack was to wipe out older imageboard culture. To this end, the attackers tried to make as many spam threads as possible in order to push legitimate content off of the last page, deleting it. The raid used bots and dozens of IP addresses in order to bypass our flood filters.

Thankfully, a board user joined the new Discord server and alerted us within less than an hour of the raid starting, and I was able to lock down the boards while the moderators removed the spam posts. However, it looks like the attack partially succeeded, because on our less active boards we still have posts going back to the start of the site reboot in 2016, but on the more active boards that were already full, such as /lounge/, we have many less pages and only a couple years worth of threads. Our threads were bumped around too, so a few older threads are now near the top of their boards.

This incident also showed me that my backup system had not been working correctly. It was reporting that the backups were being uploaded each week, but in fact I didn't have anything newer than May. I cancelled the managed backup service I had been paying for, and switched to a custom solution, which I finished implementing today before re-enabling posting on the boards.

It is likely that I could restore most of our older content using the May backups, but this will require splicing the boards using some custom code so that we don't lose any current content. I will look into doing this when I have time/energy. Alternatively I am considering just putting a snapshot of the site from May on a subdomain for people to view the old threads that were lost, and I will probably end up doing this first.

I have got captchas working correctly (as far as I can tell), so they will stay enabled for the time being. Please report any issues on the IRC or Discord chats, accessible from the "chat" link in the navigation menu. These chats are linked together, so it doesn't matter which one you use.

Warm Regards,
~Seisatsu

Idea: Board Exchange Program

I am thinking of doing a Board Exchange Program with Uboachan. Is it a good idea? Here's how it would work:

A few of Uboachan's tamest boards where people are generally polite but there is currently almost no activity, namely the Dreams board, the Art/Oekaki board, and the Literature board, would be linked in Sushichan's menu, and clearly designated as being external boards. I am not sure whether I can work these into /kaitensushi/ easily, and I may not want to.

I am more hesitant to link Sushichan boards on Uboachan, but if I did, I would add Sushichan's Kitchen board, and possibly replace Uboachan's dead Japan board with a link to our Otaku board. (I would need to be convinced that this is a good idea.)

Please give me your thoughts in this thread.

Please don't join any "federations" or "rings"

This hopefully isn't a problem, but in the past there have been multiple attempts to unify imageboards into a single community. One such unification exists right now which is known as the "webring". Before this there was an attempt in 2018/19? that existed solely to datamine users, and for the past 1 1/2 years there's been one guy creating imageboards on a weekly basis to spam everywhere he can (I think its a person called Space_ but I'm not sure).
I don't trust any of it and its spread some low-quality posters much farther than they should be (People from 8chan in particular).

Please don't join any of this stuff if they ever come here trying to convince you.

Janitor Applications

Hello sushi rolls!

Lately the moderators have been finding unacceptable amounts of rotten sushi left out on the floor and tables during their off-hours. Obviously it's time for some new hires to fill in the gaps!

I am now accepting Janitor Applications! As a Janitor who loves Sushichan, and ideally a person with a stomach for dirty work, your job will be to clean up bad sushi (cp or spam posts) and annihilate (permaban) the offenders who are almost certainly killer robots disguised as honest patrons of our establishment. Janitors who perform admirably might even one day become moderators! (Currently there isn't much of a difference, but I hope to change that soon as well.)

If this work interests you, please answer the questions below and email your responses to the email in the email field, that field that everyone knows emails aren't supposed to go in ever.

1. Why do you love sushichan?

2. How long have you been frequenting this establishment?

3. How often do you think you can scan the /kaitensushi/ board for rotten sushi and killer robots?

4. What is your timezone, and what are likely to be your most active hours?

5. Are you willing to stick around in an IRC channel most or preferably all of the time? This can mean leaving a client open on your computer and checking it every so often for new intel and instructions.

6. Why do you want to be a Janitor? Why do you think you would make a good Janitor?

7. Can we rely on you not to get heated and overstep your specific Janitor duties with the powers entrusted to you?

8. What is your favorite board and why?

9. What is your favorite kind of sushi?

Thank you everyone for sticking around through these troubling times! Questions about the application process can be sent to my email address.

typosquatting attempt?

There's a site called sushichan.org that I had stumbled upon. Weird site, says you were hacked or something. I checked the source code of the website to see if something was hidden inside it, like something that automatically downloads something to your browser, but nothing was really found.

If you've not considered it, keep in mind multiple domains can be bought like sushigirl.com, sushigirl.net, sushigirl.org, sushichan.com, sushigirl.net, sushichan.org, etc. I've seen this site been called sushichan, and I'm just a person who happened to associate that name - rightfully so, as this is a chan - with the domain.

Samachan.org users looking for a new home

Update: New /otaku/ board with landing sticky for Samachan users at >>>/otaku/

Hello sushis, I have a proposal I want to run by you. I have been in discussion with a group of users from the recently shuttered Samachan, who are looking for a new place to live. They were a fairly comfy site with just two boards, and they are in talks with me over how they might adapt to living here without disrupting our own culture too much. I think with the addition of a single board, the rest of their content could probably fit into the existing boards.

I wanted to run this by the userbase to see if there are objections or concerns, and have a conversation about these, before giving them an answer. As a condition of coming here they would be expected to use polite language and follow the rules. Currently the planning group is just a few users, with the rest of them scattered and out of contact with each other.

TOR blocking

Hi!

It looks like you block posting from TOR.

I can understand the reason, but, I think that it's a little bit unethical. TOR is a perfect way to pass through government firewalls and keep the path of your journey on the web in secret from ISPs, server owners , government and others.

Maybe we could find a way to allow people to use TOR and enjoy such a cozy board at the same time, please?

Sushi World

Would anyone be interested in me hosting a copy of the Uboachan Dream World MUD specifically for sushichan users? We could call it Sushi World or something silly like that. If you haven't checked it out yet, it's a multiplayer text adventure engine I wrote over the past week where the users create all of the content with in-game commands. You can explore and make worlds with friends and it's probably also good for roleplaying.

There's an instance running at http://dream.uboachan.net/ already.

Recent Downtime Explanation

The hosting provider forced a reboot to patch over a critical CPU-level security vulnerability that was discovered recently affecting all operating systems. Our server did not survive the reboot. It's unknown whether I broke something or they did, since we hadn't rebooted in a long time.

In any case, I had to reinstall the operating system but they saved all of the files so nothing was lost in the end, it's just a pain. Especially since my laptop stopped working for a few days and the server broke in the middle of me attending a convention.

Most of the downtime was spent moving files back and forth from my home and the server since there wasn't enough room on the server to extract the backup. (The backup archive was more than half the size of the server.)

Things may still be broken and I'm still setting up other services on the server, so please email me if there are any issues.

Board CSS

I really like the selection on the site and very much enjoy Rei/Zero, however every once in awhile I like to change it up. So rather then make requests for additional styles, could the function like 8chan where a Sushi can make their own custom CSS while browsing? If not then could I suggest 2nd image style for the board?

Request to improve moderation.

Take a serious stance against censorship: make objective rules about what can and can't be posted and stick to them.

don't delete peoples posts for subjective reasons like it being "political". what always happens with this is the rules are applied with bias and it ends up creating an echo chamber because interesting people leave after their opinions get deleted.

If you don't like what someone says you can always post your own view or just ignore it and find a thread you like. Deleting peoples work is unfair.
R: 20 / I: 8

The laws of sushichan

One of the things that we could learn from 4chan and 8chan is that we need to cement our values into rules.

1. Do not accuse another anon of being a shill/JIDF/SJW. Do not make ungrounded accusations.
2. Do not tell another anon to 'go back to 4chan/reddit/tumblr' or other places. Do not foster paranoia.
3. If you are in an argument, be civil and use respectful language. Disagreement does not mean you should act rudely.

I also think we need some guidelines for mods that should be made public, and we need to reach a consensus on when using tripcodes is acceptable.

I'm not trying to bring about tyranny, I'm trying to establish transparency and solidity. If we have concise AND public guidelines, any violation both by users and mods/vols will be much easy to handle.

Uncomfy Topics

Recently there have been some threads on lounge that concern me. So, I have some questions for the community:

What topics are uncomfy? Things like politics, misogyny, gay bashing? What makes a topic uncomfy? What should I do with these topics – when should I move a thread to /hell/, and when should I lock it outright, delete it, or ban it? Should I actually be using /hell/ as a place to move uncomfy topics, or is that actually a bad idea? Maybe threads should only be moved to /hell/ if they become uncomfy later in the discussion? Is it ok to have uncomfy discussions in /hell/ or are they a detriment to the site?

I feel like these are important questions and that some rule changes/additions could be needed. Please help me make these important decisions for the community before we get too settled in to one way of doing things.

Should /kawaii/ be SFW?

So, the rules have said since before I got here that bewbz were allowed on /kawaii/, but some users have brought up concerns that no NSFW content was on the board until recently and they actually preferred it that way, with NSFW content being restricted to /lewd/. /kawaii/ is currently the only board outside the hell/lewd category with NSFW content, and unlike those two shows in kaitensushi by default, which makes the whole recent posts section NSFW unless /kawaii/ is blocked.

Should the rules restrict NSFW content to /lewd/ instead of allowing a little on /kawaii/?

Wildcard used to be just like the wildcard board on uboa. Topic changed every month. I suggest we bring it back (I mean, it's still there, and it's just sitting there unused and forever stuck in STEM), I also think it'll give us something to talk about and boost activity a little.

How do I run this thing?

Hey there.

So, I'm running this site now because I had the most resources to do so. However, I wasn't a super active Sushichan user to begin with and I'm not familiar with every nook and cranny of the original site. I only have a recent siterip to go off of here while I'm rebuilding the place. Since I'm stuck at the helm, you'll all have to help me decide what's still missing, what features to implement, and how to keep this community running smooth.
