Out of interest, what kind of hardware does this site run on? $45 seems honestly a bit steep for a site of this caliber.

Giving this a subtle nudge, I wouldn't mind donating if I knew where the money went into.

The IP belongs to RamNode, and since both uboachan and sushichan use the same IP, I assume both sites are hosted on one of the more expensive offerings from RamNode. This is what I figured out by goofing around a bit with host and whois.

For self hosting, this is probably one of the cheaper and less time consuming ways of doing it, and you don't have to think so much about the hardware it is hosted on.

We're at RamNode, using an OpenVZ server with 4096mb of RAM and 300gb of disk space. The server is currently using about 1/4 of the available RAM and 1/2 of the available disk space, so it may be possible to downgrade a little. $3 of the monthly cost goes into the DDoS protection option offered by RamNode, which was more of a concern in the past when this server was part of an active IRC network and subject to attack from time to time. Now that the IRC network in question only has a few users these days, and Uboachan and Sushichan are pretty low profile, the DDoS protection might not really be necessary anymore, but it is a small expense.

You are probably the second person to suggest that the server might be too beefy for its current purpose. After taking inventory just now, I think I agree. We should be able to cut our costs in half by downgrading to a plan with 2048gb ram and 250gb storage space. So I will go ahead and do that if it's allowed.

Edit: It's done. The server should cost $23 per month from now on.

you could get away with like a $5/month shared host and Cloudflare's free tier

I get the impression a lot of these VPS providers are quick to shut down machines by customers that didn't purchase DDoS protection, when they're the target of one. So I think the extra 3 dollars is well worth the money.

From my use of this site, I didn't notice the downgrade, so I think the cheaper option should work out.

Alright, thanks for the heads up. By the way, how was the downgrade? OVH only lets you upgrade the VPS package, downgrading requires spinning up a completely new instance, migrating to that and deleting the old one.

I lost a dedicated server that way.

It was instantaneous, I didn't even have to reboot.

With RamNode, can you use your own OS, or do you have to use some image they provide? I was thinking about doing a web project of my own and I found a good LAMP stack bundle thing so I'd rather do that than whatever Linux distro a VPS host might provide.

Not sure, you should email them. I'm just using Debian.

OpenVZ is limited to a selection of Linux distros. With a KVM instance you can upload your own ISO to install whatever you want.

Update: We moved servers a few months ago due to a virus infection on the previous server, as well as a need for upgrades that couldn't be done in place, and I have consolidated stuff so that we're only costing $13 per month now. I haven't needed any donations for a while.
