First (non-sticky) thread on new board!
A bit late, heh, but what's everyone watching if anything? I'm still following Hamefura, Yesterday no Uttate, Listeners, and Arte mostly but also keeping up if less zealously with a few other shows. This season has been good to me.

How would you defend anime/manga against the accusation that it's sexist? Obviously there are anime/manga this doesn't apply to, but I'm talking more like moe/bishoujo type stuff, like 90% of what's on this board.

I'm just playing devil's advocate here, and if you exclusively like gritty action manga like Berserk this doesn't apply to you, but think things like Konosuba – Aqua being a 16 or 17 year old character with no pants and huge boobs with jiggle physics. Most moe media focuses on high school or middle school characters and is not shy about sexualizing them. If someone you respected approached you and your Kuroneko dakimakura pillow and said you were promoting a sexist subculture how could you reasonably defend yourself?

You want to know what my problem with lusting after csushi rollical minors is? I think that it's very clear and if not you're being deliberately obtuse…

 No.3696

>>3695
I don't like to just assume what other people think because I don't like to argue in bad faith, but you're basically inviting me to state your position for you so here goes:

If I had to guess it's because you think finding any character under the "csushi rollical" age of 18 attractive is morally reprehensible. At best you think it's "gross" and should be censored, and at worst you think anyone who commits such a thoughtcrime should be shot/tortured/fed to a woodchipper/etc. (The latter end of this spectrum is concerningly common). You probably don't have a good reason for this beyond how it makes you feel but if you do I'd genuinely like to hear it instead of just smug non-replies.

The response to this argument would be that the availability of fictional, sexualized depictions of minors has been studied and everything I've seen seems to show that it causes no societal/real world harm beyond hurting your feelings, and may in fact be a positive force. In addition to that, you're ignoring basic, proven biology. The majority of adult men are going to find neotenous features and the expression of secondary sex characteristics attractive. It doesn't matter what character those features are attached to. This is just science, and you can look it up yourself if you don't believe me. The reason we have laws against sexualizing minors IRL is not just because it's gross. It's because it has the potential to victimize, cause trauma, and hurt real human beings, all of which are things that cannot happen to purely fictional characters. In conclusion please take this kind of "criticism" somewhere else.

I watched Yokohama shopping trip. It was so comfy I had to read the manga… I just finished it now and towards the end I found myself crying more and more. I dont know how much was in the story, and how much it was making me reflect on my life…

Slice of life that makes me reflect on my life is exactly what I love. The bittersweet realization of things, seeing flaws in the present, mistakes in the past, drawing conclusion how to better myself… It feels like they fill me with what I have lost, or never truly learned. How to be human, how to be a decent human being. They also feel now and then like a therapy session, confronting me with things I experienced but never truly found peace with or gained something positive out of it. Yokohama is on my list since ages and I will definitely prioritize it now.

I'm excited for Hokuro and Domas going off to train and redeem themselves. Still mad at Domas but he at least seems to have a lot of remorse for his weakness to authority. I also feel bad for Daida but I'm not sure I can ever forgive him for ordering Domas to kill Bojji in the first place.

caught up with this today so I could watch the new episode, what a great show so far. All the characters are so interesting and cool that I'm really on the edge of my seat whenever something bad is happening to them. Especially Hilling, she's turned out to be an unexpected favorite so far.

It was cute to see Bojji's return, and a bunch more magic than what we've seen so far. I'm excited for where King Desha goes with his whole "take over the kingdom" plot.

After Ouken kills Kingbo I thought it was a little odd they gave him a backstory for seemingly no reason other than to make us feel bad since he's (not?) dead now. But then I realized that in the flashback, his dad is totally the forest king from episode 04. Since we see him being visiting by the Ranking of Kings person before burning and murdering his own kingdom, it kinda fits with my early theory that the forest king was someone who won the ranking. They explained in some episode that people who win the Ranking of Kings are given a gift from god, but they always go crazy after seeing it or something. I think that's what happened there.

 No.3598

It was nice to see Domas again but I kinda feel like most of last episode could have been skipped by just having Desha come in and say "yeah I wanna get that mirror friendly lady too"

Ohh gotcha. I felt that was the weakest episode so far but I still liked it, especially Michiru's character growth and the old coach dude's backstory. What I didn't like as much was how filler it felt, which seems unneeded in an anime original, especially something this high-budget. I had trouble reconciling the literal bloodsports within the world they've created too.

 No.3548

BNA had a strong start, but I think the plot strained my disbelief and petered out near the end. I was hoping to explore more drama and character development around the main character but they had to bring the pink furry girl to rob her of her spotlight.

Yea, I would agree with this. Regardless, it's still Studio Trigger, so the show is a treat to the eyes, even for non-furries like myself. The writing and pacing could have been a lot better, but it's still a good casual show I'd recommend to people who are already interested.

Have any of you met other "otaku" irl? A small part, but admittedly a part of the reason I got into anime is because it's a relatively small subculture in which it should theoretically be easy to connect with other people over a shared interest. I haven't invested that much time into it, but already I can probably find at least one anime or manga I've consumed in common with any given otaku. It's fun to hang out in forums like this, but has anyone had any experience connecting with people, coincidentally or on purpose, over this shared hobby?

3 that stand out:

First was the lead in a factory I worked in for a bit, who seemed like a mainstream anime guy until he'd get sweaty enough to take off his kingdom hearts hoodie and reveal t shirts with Azumanga Daioh or TouHou stuff printed from redbubble. Once made an over 9000 joke.

Second was a guy in the same place, working across from me, unashamedly showed his phone which had some honkin' hentai bikini titties as the homescreen and a soundcloud that was playing lolicore type stuff.

Third and the champion was this guy I knew in high school who always had /a/ open, waifu bloat widgets, anime and hentai torrenting on the reg. He had wallpapers that would cycle through several waifuy wallpapers and one time I thought it'd be funny to litter the wallpaper folder with thomas the tank engine images to fuck with him. We watched an episode of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei together once.

Everyone else was pretty casual and only knew mainstream. I'd ask if they liked "older animes" and get answers like "Yeah I love One Piece and Mirai Nikki." I see a lot of people driving around my area with anime stickers littering their cars. But finding a true Otaku is something else.

 No.3218

I have once, over a forum. The experience was good at the start but as subjects started to run dry the focus became more on drama and interpersonal relationships. I think some of them are married now to each other.

I concluded that binding over passive hobbies is just too brittle, because it doesn't really say anything about someone. As long as there's a barrier of entry and some skill level, there's no drama and you are much more likely to bind with fellow club members.

Before 2020 I used to play golf every other week at a local club and it reached the point where I knew all the regulars and staff and they knew me.

Now I have another problem : being so much around my parents and co-workers has made me hate being around people in general.

 No.3221

I've met quite a few over the years, though it's been a while now.

The most notable one would be the guy who was my roommate for 4 years of college. One day the college dining hall was playing Touhou music on the speakers so when I got back to my dorm I went on /jp/ planning to make a thread about it only to find someone else had already made a thread about it. We talked a bit, exchanged contact details, met up, he ended up being a cool guy and the next year we started rooming together. It was very nice being able to just walk 10 feet to another room and talk about whatever anime or VNs. He even had a younger brother who also went on /jp/ who started going to the same college and moved in with us so it was definitely the most fun part of my life. We never did find out who actually played the Touhou music in the dining hall though.

I've also met several people from /jp/ at anime conventions and they've all ranged from cool guys I'm still in touch with online to just boring at worst, I've never had a genuinely bad experience there.

I was also active in my college's anime club with my friend for a brief time and most the people were the stereotypical weeaboos you'd expect at an anime club but a few of them had decent power levels and were pretty cool. After a few months I ended up not going to the club anymore and just hanging out with the cool ones outside of it.

I'd love to meet more people I can actually talk about my hobbies and passions with but unfortunately I'm not really aware of avenues for it outside of college. At best I met once guy casually into Japanese games at work.

 No.3267

Out here in California, nearly everyone I've talked to has seen at least some anime. But, people who have seen as much as I have or who consider it a primary interest seem rarer. But yes I have met several, including some really hardcore ones who collect stuff, and I like talking about or watching anime with them.

It's hard to find people who have seen a lot of older or obscure stuff like I have, but they are definitely around.

 No.3549

A few of my cousins are and I've gone to anime conventions with them before. I've bonded with a few acquaintances over otaku stuff.

I think it would be harder to bond with them now since I'm less with the new releases now and my identity is more tied to other things now. But it does make it easier for me to have something to talk about to kids who have more time to watch anime.

It was disappointing. For someone who wants to be the manliest, turning into a girl should have been the greatest battle to overcome and he lost.

Yeah I like gender benders and I'm trans, but I couldn't stay interested in Boku Girl. All I liked was the art and the supernatural stuff, but the characters were stupid.

To be fair I've essentially stopped reading non-pornographic manga. Originally it was because I wanted to step away from reading translations to practice my Japanese and porn was the only thing I could reliably read. But I just sigh when I look at manga that look like they will string along for many chapters instead of ending appropriately.
