 No.2725[Reply]

This thread is dedicated for the discussion of "gekiga manga".
For those who don't know, gekiga literally translate as "dramatic image". This kind of manga was born after WW2 when a group of authors got tired of the overly-comical and children-like contents usually contained in manga and decided to create their own movement based on telling the horrors of the war and showing what kind of lives people led at the time.
Some acclaimed authors are Yoshihiro Tatsumi, Tsuge Yoshiharu and Tadao, Seiichi Hayashi, Kamimura Kazuo and many others

I'm not a fan of gekiga but i did like a few works (A Drifting Life, Abandon the Old in Tokyo, The Push Man and Other Stories and Akairo Elegy).
To me there's a feeling that they are edgy just to be edgy, maybe it's not true but i still feel it when reading gekiga manga.

I'm surprised to see many Tezuka manga tagged as gekiga in manga-updates, it's funny because i did not enjoy them but for other reasons and never thought they as gekiga. Maybe they are not and it is a misstag?

Oh, and there are many official translations that mirror the pages, making them left-to-right.

>>2743
I think the author wanted to convey a lot more than the pages had space for, so he skipped a lot details, focused on emotions and made each action exagerated and dramatic. Also it is about a very specific moment of Japan and much of it is lost on us who don't know what it was like, and probably many newer japanese people too.

>To me there's a feeling that they are edgy just to be edgy
I don't agree with this, I just don't find any particular edginess about them. Maybe you could say that, for example, authors like Kago or Umezu could be viewed as "edgy", but I still don't get what do you classify as edgy.

>I'm surprised to see many Tezuka manga tagged as gekiga in manga-updates

Funnily enough Tezuka was the main reason for the foundation of the gekiga movement. At the time (50s-60s) he was one of the most popular mangaka and he almost exclusively published light-hearted and funny stories mainly aimed at childrens. Gekiga artists hated him for that, so much that he suffered a not so short period of depression.

Of course it changes things. I'm saying to someone who has already said goodbye that it is not a point of no return. Goodbyes can hurt badly, but no one who cares would feel anything but joy when you change your mind. There's no fake positivity in my post, it is the only thing I can think of to try making a sushi roll feel a little better on the off chance they are not already dead.

I mean for me personally I had only vaguely kept up with SnK because I cared about since middle school. I only watched the first season and ova, but I started reading the manga when season 2 was delayed. I stopped keeping up with the manga after 2017 and that was when I slowly stopped paying attention to it. The ending did make me feel sad, moreso out of nostalgia knowing it's been with me for almost 7 years. At least I can finally say farewell to the last shonen series that remained since my school years.

So I finally got around to starting this, let's talk about it! I'll post my thoughts as I get further in.

I'm not sure what the fuck I'm getting into here but it's giving me strong suffering flags. Really pretty show, looks on the same level as modern KyoAni stuff like Chuunibyou and Hibike and AmaBuri. I love the character designs so far and the dream world stuff is very fun to watch. OST near the end of episode 1 stood out to me as well. Among other things it kinda reminds me of Yume Nikki with the whole "shut-in girl explores weird dream world" thing

So what I get from just seeing episode 1 is that she visits some kind of dream world with the power to bring her suicided friend back to life, and to do so she has to play along with some weird beetle gacha to "protect" other suicided girls in the dream world for… reasons?

I haven't watched this, but I'm just gonna point out that if the anime brings up a topic (political or not), I don't see any reason why the topic can't be commented on in the thread that's literally dedicated to commenting on the anime.

If you read the rest of the thread, you would've noticed comments have already taken place on the LGBTQ+ topics raised in the anime. The other sushi has made a short, relevant, and on-topic remark about it, it's not a big deal and it's contained to the appropriate thread. I know my own post contributes to this, but please don't derail the thread just because someone made an on-topic remark - heaven forbid fiction reflects real life.

>if the anime brings up a topic (political or not), I don't see any reason why the topic can't be commented on in the thread that's literally dedicated to commenting on the anime.
Obviously I'm not saying that you can't discuss the themes or characters in the anime. I'm not caught up past episode 5 yet but there's at least one character whose whole deal is that she's a very boyish girl and is conflicted about that, so I'm sure the gender stuff is talked about more in depth later.
>The other sushi has made a short, relevant, and on-topic remark about it, it's not a big deal and it's contained to the appropriate thread.
However, adding "Trans rights" to your post (in my opinion) is no more on topic than if I were to append "ACAB" or "Blue Lives Matter" or some such nonsense to my posts about an anime with police in it. The only purpose for slogans like these and others is to signal where you stand on culture war bullshit. There's other ways to say that you appreciate that the show treats gender issues with respect.

Am I being overly grumpy about what amounts to how a certain sentiment is phrased? Maybe, but I thoroughly agree with >>2294 in that I'd really like to keep this place free of the cancer that's infested much of the rest of the net. I'm more than willing to talk about this more but I think if anyone wants to continue this discussion though it should be done on /hell/ or something.

> However, adding "Trans rights" to your post (in my opinion) is no more on topic than if I were to append "ACAB" or "Blue Lives Matter" or some such nonsense to my posts about an anime with police in it.

I mean, the character in the anime literally stripped off her shirt to reveal an undergarment with a trans flag and kisses a character that described himself as a trans boy. It's not like I shoehorned politics somewhere they didn't belong or exist, like you imply. The episode was quite obliquely a positive depiction of trans issues.

With that aside, I can understand the want to avoid slogans, and I apologize for that. In my head, I'd really only seen that one used as a positive sentiment. It's not really the same as expressing a wide-reaching sentiment about wanting to reform or not reform law enforcement in the United States – 'trans rights' is a bit simpler. Still, I totally get that everything adjacent to politics online has been completely pervasive and exhausting in the last few years. I'm tired too. So, I apologize.

Let me tell you a story about the "toki-udon" -
A scampy little tale of a time long gone.
"Wait for the cashier, money a-countin' -
Get on with the timin' for a little less payin'!"
Tried the same little trick, right down to the bait,
"one, two, three, four, five, six, seven'eight!"
pause
"What's the time? Niner or a ten?"
"Sorry my dearie, cashless is the trend."

This rakugo is about a girl who went to an udon restaurant, she finished eating and before paying the check she remembers an old Edo rakugo of some guy who tricked the owner by asking the hour while counting his money (counting something like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6… What time is it? Ah 8 o clock? Ok, 9, 10, here you go). She tries to do the same thing but the momemt she asks the time, the owner elegantly tells her they just recieve electronic payment.

This is a promotional anime for a manga called "Uchi No Shishou Wa Shippo Ga Nai." Basically its about a tanuki girl who wants to be a human.
