True, but on the other hand Kumami tried to avoid playing Agari so she wouldn't break her. Kuroba seems to have no issue with what she's doing.

It's hard to tell now but so far I'm thinking they might be opposites in some way: Kumami is a good girl at heart who developed evil tendencies against her better judgement. Kuroba seems like she's actually bad at her core but has shown a friendly face to everyone she met.

Kumami -> Mind break (using takkyuu to traumatize Agari into becoming her obedient table tennis groupie)
Kuroba -> Corruption (warping Agari's mind into becoming the very thing that she hates through takkyuu)

With Kumami, Agari still strives to go above, but always staying below Kumami. A willing lackey who's been thoroughly disciplined into knowing her place.
With Kuroba, all of Koyori's work is undone and the tanoshii is no more. All that matters is the result. She's stuck with takkyuu because it's the one thing she's good at. She still aims to be above everyone but now it's by forcefully bringing down and squashing everyone under her.

Pic should make it easier to understand.

It'd be an interesting subplot, since Koyori never cared much about the results, maybe even to a fault, so turning it all on its head after that loss might present unique opportunities. Of course that's hard to tell without seeing Koyori's reaction now.

Interestingly I think Agari wouldn't have self destructed if Kumami kept beating her, sandbagging on purpose and then pulling the rug under her feet revealing she was holding back is what could've made Agari break. So in the end it was kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

If Koyori did just get her own Kuma equivalent it's fitting that she gets one that is laser focused on ping pong and her ping pong aesthetics (idols) like Koyori is (ping pong communication, her brand of ping pong) while the core of Agari and Kuma's arc had more to do with their internal issues and self actualization on a more personal level.

I can't help but wonder why show Kuroba having one play style in chapter 0 and then suddenly go "nope she was completely different in every practice match after that one".
Editorial meddling? Or 4D Asano chess? I want to believe in the latter.

Not this time but, now that you mention it, I can totally see what you mean. The original wording doesn't come close to any such innuendo. It's just meant to be Koyori saying she can't climb off the rail.

It means all those factors. Hokuto is literally using the english word "condition".

Actually I just noticed a mistake…
"どんな相手だって私は" – she hasn't finished this sentence. Mogami is interrupting her.

It's actually meant to be something like

How did it get so bad? Seriously, even Ichimonji didn't end up like that. That's tough. Especially when it's 0-5.

 No.5947

Asano Yagura was absolutely merciless. No "Koyori was actually the first to play" fake-out. Hanabi's time to shine didn't come. Not even Kiruka and Munemune were spared. Suzumegahara crushed.

Very simple chapter to translate. Nevertheless, some notes:

>>5935
The chapter title is just "dokidoki shinai" (didn't dokidoki). I thought up poetic ways to go about it ("unracing heart", "heart left unraced") but I'll leave that choice up to typesetter-san.

>>5937
Satsuki says "we" and the furigana is "Suzumegahara"

>>5938
I noticed a typo and instantly noticed I mistranslated Mogami's line.

Mogami:
To provide a better ranking in the group stage, all five matches are taken in consideration.

A 5-0 win makes it clear you're in a class of your own

What a mess… My apologies.

>>5939
"Crawl back from this hole"

Mogami uses an expression that conveys that meaning. "To overcome a bad situation"

>>5941
Kuroba's line is more literally something like "That thing again today… Can you do it, please?"

"UZU…" can have multiple translations but going for something that conveys "itch" feels not ideal.

"It was my first time"[… "Seeing this brand of table tennis"]

>>5942
Koyori says "table tennis that doesn't dokidoki [her]"

I went for "dull brand of table tennis", but feel free to pick whatever you prefer.

>>5946
>Is she criticizing Kuroba's table tennis or her own, during the match? Or just the match itself?

Good question. Koyori's putting distance between her and the brand of table tennis she's crying about, so I assume it's Kuroba's. Even so, Koyori is all about making both her and her opponent feel the dokidoki, so if their hearts aren't syncing it could be an indictment of both her and her opponent's ability to make each other dokidoki.

My interpretation is based on >>5943 and >>5944 – Kuroba seems to be using the RPB. Notice she's returning Koyori's ball in much the same way as she did vs Juumonji ( >>4665 and >>4666 ) but Koyori manages to break through Kuroba's RPB in a shot that mimics her return of Agari's smash way back in the beginning of the manga. Since Kuroba's RPB is her trump card, I'm assuming she went for her secret technique that made her win the match (the one we haven't seen yet, alluded in >>5777 )

That secret technique can be the one that makes Kuroba's brand of table tennis so dull to Koyori's (but can is really when it mind-breaks five scorching takkyuu musume?).

>"dokidoki shinai" (didn't dokidoki)

>Asano Yagura was absolutely merciless. No "Koyori was actually the first to play" fake-out. Hanabi's time to shine didn't come. Not even Kiruka and Munemune were spared. Suzumegahara crushed.
Yeah, hopefully Suzumegahara doesn't play the idols again too soon. 1-4 would be possible to come back from. Agari making a comeback against Kumami's 11-1 was a bit of a reach but it was one match and already midway. Actually managing to win 3 matches when they just lost 5 will be a lot harder.

Hanabi is still the key, though. If she wins her first match, surely the others can get psyched up.

>That secret technique can be the one that makes Kuroba's brand of table tennis so dull to Koyori's (but can is really when it mind-breaks five scorching takkyuu musume?).

To be fair I assume it's the entire team swipe that did most of the mindbreak, but Koyori actually losing her dokidoki certainly didn't help.

We all thought Mozuyama would get idol'd first but our girls jobbed first. Surprising development.

I actually like the blunt simplicity of "My Heart Didn't Race" the most. It's mirroring her usual catchphrase to hammer in the despair of having it denied to her.

>I need us to do it

>that was my first time
You're doing this on purpose…

Dull is nice and concise, but if it's supposed to be referencing the title it might be better to go with "That was the first time / I'd ever seen / a brand of table tennis that didn't make my heart race…". So she's not really insulting the style but commenting on its (lack of) effect on her. Let me know if you think this would work better.

 No.5971

>>5970
>You're doing this on purpose…

>>I need us to do it

"Today, again, that… Can [you/we] do it?"

You can go for the usual "we need to use that" cliche if you'd like, but I feel my way flows better. Both people involved in the conversation know what it is. Maybe add in the "again" but I feel like that's redundant. Maybe something like "[I'm sorry,] could/can we do it again today [please]?"

>>that was my first time

Fine, I'll give you that one.

>"That was the first time / I'd ever seen / a brand of table tennis that didn't make my heart race…"

That can work.

>>5959
I was getting the heebie-jeebies for Mozuyama myself. They made it to the quarter finals in the nationals, right? I wonder how far they went in the previous city tournament. I can see them being runner-ups but that would imply they played Teikoku in the finals and Kururi lost, which seems unlikely considering Kururi's mindset when they met Suzumegahara (made it seem like Kururi hadn't lost a single game since meeting Zakuro).

Can't believe they offscreened the Ace. And now we've got to sit through another chapter of Dog. I guess the bright side is that Suzumegahara will probably need to sweep the next round to progress now, so the likelihood of more jobbing from anyone seems low.

RPB is not her trump card, it's her regular card. She uses it on opponents weak enough to have fun against, it's full of love and dokidoki.
Even her merciless and "dull" style of play, the reveal of which is being built up right now, is not her trump card as she's been using it in every match after chapter 0.
Her trump card is her "Driver of the South" playstyle that Mogami says she won't ever show (but narrative convention dictates that we WILL see it eventually, probably in the rematch after they both pass to the next stage of the competition)
