The reception to this new spin-off in the raildex universe has been overwhelmingly positive, with many commenting on the love and care given to the most beloved faction in the entirety of the series.

Older fans who have DROPPED raildex have been reported to say that to aru anbu no ITEM was enough to get them to pick it back up again and the raildex universe is currently experiencing a second renaissance both in popularity and critical acclaim. "Now that the main event is here, there's never been a better time to be a raildex fan", some have said.

All things considered, it's extremely likely to aru anbu no ITEM will get three anime seasons of 24 episodes each, catalysing a fourth season of to aru majutsu no index (11 episodes, rumored to air in 2028). The future of the series has been put into question ever since to aru kagaku no railgun fell flat of meeting expectations and there's currently no plans for a continuation, although plans are underway to salvage some fan favorites of that particular spin-off (Kuroko, Misaki, Saten, Uiharu, Kiyama Harumi, Kongou and her clique, Haruue, Tokiwadai student #23 and, of course, MISAKA #10032).

We all know that this is but a prelude, a tease for the TRUE main event, that is the introduction, retrospection and prospection of the TRUE NUMBER ONE (also known as the ONE who SCHOOL'd the entirety of ITEM). The entire scientific part of the franchise is building up for it, with Railgun and Mental Out focusing on technology and theories that relate or resemble his ability. ITEM is just a piece of the Dark Matter puzzle and at most their anime (if it gets one, because Astral Buddy won't anytime soon) will get a single rushed cour so that they can get to the main course quickly. After that they will have no choice but be FORCED to adapt a fourth season of Index and the fanbase will collectively achieve SYSTEM (神ならぬ身にて天上の意思に辿り着くもの).
