Hello everybody, I need a comfy place to talk about VNs. /vn/ on 4chan is filled with literal pedos who only talk about eroge, and I don't like Reddit's format enough to use r/visualnovels. So what have you all been reading lately? What are some great games that we've been missing out on?

 No.698

i dont usually read vns(not because i dont like them, i dont have any motivation to), but i really liked dysfunctional systems and jupiters knot. idk if its cause im not used to the genre or whatever, but i dont care. the prequel to DS sucks though, im looking forward to the actual sequel

 No.699

Jupiter's knot looks pretty neat, I'll check that one out.

I haven't read a VN in years, but recently felt the urge to dive into one again. My last pick was Rewrite and I really enjoyed it, even though I'm not that much into urban fantasy.

 No.703

i am not super into vns but i loved narcissu a lot. tried the sequel but i guess it just felt like the original self-contained story was perfect as-is so i didnt bother finishing it.

i dont know if they count but im a big fan of the hotel dusk games and zero escape series too.

I honestly preferred Side 2nd. It didn't make me cry like OG Narcissu did but was a better story overall. To each their own though.

Juniper's Knot is a great little game, really good for a Western release. Love the music.

Still haven't read Narcissu, gosh, how useless…

I'm currently playing Karakara, which is another short one (4-6 hours I think). Light and silly but well-grounded, the tone starts to shift about halfway through. I'm enjoying it and interested to see where it will go. Also fully voice acted + has an option for both English and Japanese subtitles, which is a plus for my language studies.

You can pick it up for a dollar in this week's Humble Bundle along with a bunch of other light distractions. 18+ scenes require a separate purchase on Denpasoft, bought them on sale out of curiosity but I think they detract from the story.

 No.791

I'm currently reading Higurashi.
It's a bit strange, because in the past few years MangaGamer have released new translations for most (but not all, yet) chapters, which is supposedly the best way to read it. I've checked out both translations, and while the new is definitely better, there are still infrequent errors, like "strawberryt", "an classroom" and "gamering attention" instead of garnering attention. In neither translation do errors bother me, the writing is stellar, but it's strange to pick between which one you prefer now.
Otherwise, this is the comfiest horror I've experienced. Normally horror is treated all about lots of pressure on the reader, but this one spends lots of time getting you comfy and settled in, albeit to pull the rug out from under your feet later.
I'm not sure if that makes it sushiworthy. Horror is inherently uncomfy, but at the same time it can be very cosy too.

That looks interesting. I've heard Kira Kira is good too, about girls forming a rock band. That one's next on my list once I have the cash for it.

 No.795

>What are some great games that we've been missing out on?
Basically everything, assuming you're only reading translations.

 No.798

The latest novel I read was - and I swear I am not trolling - Euphoria. (If someone doesn't know it, it's a guro nukige, so keep that in mind if you try googling it). I was really curious because a lot of people everywhere kept saying "holy shit, the story is actually really good", so I wanted to test it out.
I obviously had to skip like 3/4 of the novel not only because it was shocking at first, but because it's so over the top it get grating after a while and you just don't even care anymore.
The story was… Eh. It was okay, it had kind of a fun twist at the end that nobody can imagine. It's probably the best story you could find in a nukige ever, but I feel it doesn't justify having to ignore all of the crap (sometimes literal) they throw at you for like, 4-5 hours or something.

I do think the sprites for the girls are gorgeous. Nemu in particular is very beautifully drawn.

Anyway, I wanted to get into Kara no Shoujo, but I haven't had the time to actually sit down and play it. I love mysteries and horror.

 No.2088

Are there any non-eroge VNs out there worth checking out? I love visual novel as a medium for storytelling, but sex scenes tend to break that immersion for me, I just want to get comfy and get lost in the story. I don't mind occasional nudity or whatever, like with films, but no porn pls

 No.2089

>>2088
Pretty much all the big name VNs have an "all ages" version with the sex scenes removed.

All the "when they cry" VNs are awesome

VNDB has a "No Sexual Content" tag: https://vndb.org/g235?f=&m=0&s=33w

I also like reading through NaNoRenO entries. There are some pretty good ones, they're always very short and almost never sexual.

I am a big fan of urban fantasy and I am playing Rewrite right this very moment!

That's a perfect pick for that genre.

 No.2310

Took a huge break from VNs since I started getting tired of all the tropes. But I decided to try playing The Hungry Lamb: Traveling in the Late Ming Dynasty, and I really liked it. Could not recommend it enough.

 No.2311

that looks like a huge hit on steam, went totally under my radar

 No.2312

>>2311

Yes, I think it flew under a lot of people's radars.

But I've gotten really picky about which VNs I read lately, so sometimes I waste a lot of time browsing the Visual Novel category on Steam, and I noticed it there.

I also bought more of their VNs to play, but it seems that the translation for their other games is not so good.

Another really interesting VN is PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo. I would recommend it to anyone who wants an intriguing paranormal-mystery VN.

I actually wrote few paragraphs why I enjoyed it.. but decided sushigirl might not be the place to discuss it. The game is for masochists. Excited to play the second part soon.

 No.2319

>>2318
I agree about the masochists part. Even though I didn't 'like' it, I was still morbidly curious about how the story concludes, so I ended up spoiling all the games for myself by looking it up on youtube.

Personally, I felt the sequels went in a different direction than I expected, but that's just my take. I'm curious to hear what someone who enjoyed the first part thinks of the sequels.

I will share my thoughts on the second game. Paradiso, the third entry, is currently being translated by Shiravune and it may take some time.

In my library, awating its turn!

Flowers series looks comfy…

Spirit Hunter: NG is also worth checking out for lovers of horror and the supernatural. I usually hate horror, and there are some gory scenes in the game, but for some reason, I couldn't put it down until I finished it.

I even ended up buying the rest of the games, Spirit Hunter: Death Mark 1 and 2, although the second one seems more like a horror-adventure game than just a visual novel. But I don't have the heart to start another horror VN for the foreseeable future, so they're just sitting in my library.

 No.2322

>>2320
Yes, I don't know Japanese, but I was so eager and impatient that I ended up watching some Russian dude play the third game, without understanding most of it. I think I was able to piece together what was going on by watching and reading what other people said.

The Flowers series does look incredibly comfy. I've always thought about giving it a try. After my binge into horror, I'm definitely in the mood for something cozy or melodramatic, like White Album 2. I've even thought about re-reading it. Did you play any of the Flowers games, or are you just 'eying' them?

Haha, I understand. I’d do the same if the games weren't translated or did not enjoy Inferno.

I only discovered Flowers by visiting Innocent Grey's page. I don't know much about it and prefer to keep it that way since I plan to play it in the future. I did see someone describe it as slower and 'dreamy'… sounds lovely.

Not that experienced player either - I only started playing visual novels at the end of last year. In particular I love the horror and mystery genre - the medium is able to present the grotesque in a way that doesn’t make me nervously uncomfortable like films can, while also keeping me engaged in a way that literature sometimes doesn't.

I recently got back into VN's, the last one I had played was Narcissu back in 2019. I enjoy them a lot, they can produce a really intimate and immersive experience; now I'm playing Tsukihime and Ef: A Fairy Tale of the Two.

 No.2325

>>2324
How are you enjoying those two so far? I've always wanted to try them, but the tags on VNDB are off-putting to me. I'm worried they might be too 'dark' in a sense.

 No.2326

>>2325
I'm liking them a lot, Tsukihime is really interesting but it can get very shocking and disturbing so I wouldn't recommend it if you don't want that kind of content; on the other side Ef gets tragic and intense (I just played the first part but I remember a bit because I saw the anime years ago) but the overall tone is beautiful and uplifting, mature and emotionally engaging, so I think you will like it. I'll share more thoughts once I finish them.

I am thinking about this image a bit too much.

Any shorter (under 10 hours) VN you guys could recommend?

Recently finished 9-Nine. The plot and chuuni aspects were kind of forgettable but I really liked the girls and humor, almost wish it had just purely been a moege instead. Art is also very nice. It's getting an anime adaptation but the VN's format seems especially ill-suited for an anime so I'm not expecting much.

Currently reading Kin'iro Loveriche and finished my first route which didn't leave much of an impression, hopefully I just happened to start with a weaker route.

>>2327
Saya no Uta or Planetarian are probably the go-to short VNs, there's also Narcissu and True Remembrance.
