Around a week ago, I noticed that my charger was peeled off just by a tiny bit, so i decided to put some tape on it.

Today, i noticed a weird smell coming out of my computer, specifically, from the charger.

When i touch the part with tape on it, BOOM, foarkin SMOKE starts to come out of the darn thing.

Turns out that the heat from the computer, eventually melted the tape i'd put on the peeled part of my charger

I removed the tape, and well, the charger stopped working, and i can't buy a new one (Im poor as dirt) which at the same times means, that i can't use my computer

Please, sushis, share painful experiences like these so that we all can have a laugh

I showed my kid brother one of those stupid videos on YouTube where someone would try and charge their DS but sticking the charging cable in a banana. He actually tried it and somehow cooked his charger.

lots of sushis are poor and/or neets… i am bad at anger management when playing competitive games so i destroyed many things by throwing them at things that also got damaged. i found no solution except for not playing such games. i am generally calm but a lot of frustration comes out when i am competing

I don't have any computers with a charger, only laptops with an USB-C port for charging. USB-C chargers for laptops are surprisingly available.

I once placed a battery-powered one-of-a-kind computer board on its metal cover. Immediately, the parts around the battery started getting hot and smelling funny. Needless to say, I spent the next 4 days and considerable chunk of money buying and replacing parts. But I managed to bring it back to life in the end. My kidneys were thankful for that. Not sure backup batteries are just a necessary evil.

I was fixing a threephase module at school (power supply) it had jacks like auxillary cords for A/V devices. I rolled my finger onto the metal and felt weird in my hand and started shaking, i shocked myself with 120VAC by being dumb, now i turn shit off before i work on it, i'm not an electrician.

another time i took my laptop apart and didn't take photos of how it looked so i ended up not having everything sit correctly, at that point i didn't care but now i take photos of EVERY step when i take something apart.

I tried to replace the charging port on my phone. To get to the port, I had to first remove several parts, including the battery. While unscrewing a part, my hand slipped, and the screwdriver punctured the battery. It immediately made a hissing sound and spat out a bunch of smoke. So I had to wait to repair my phone until I got a new battery.

Bent one of the pins for the case USB/audio connection on a brand new motherboard, just accepted it as a loss.

If the only problem is broken wires that might still be repairable. If it shorted something inside the charger it's probably bricked though.

OP here

you made me remember the time when the gpu fan of my laptop broke…
AWFUL DAYS THOSE WERE…

i could keep using the laptop because the fan did work, A LITTLE BIT, but did a horrible sound whenever it spinned, (which it only did at around 400 rpm most of the time, being the max 6000)

of course, the keyboard burned my hands whenever i had to use it, but i still did because there was literally nothing else i liked back in those days

sushi, if you don't mind me asking, what are some of things youve broken?

The only thing I've broken (although it was by accident) was the hard drive of a Mac Mini from 2014

I was cozied up on my desk, peacefully installing linux mint on the darn thing, when by accident, i hit the computer just a bit too hard with my elbow

the hard drive did a BRRRRRRSSKKKK sound, and that was it

Do you have any pictures of how the laptop ended up looking ?

i always clean my keyboard with a humid piece of paper, and i always make sure that NO water enters the components

cleaned my dirty laptop with a damp paper towel
a drop went in a vent hole and i heard a hiss
wouldn't turn on anymore

I tried to add some RAM to a friend’s laptop. After installing it, the machine would turn itself off because one of the cooling fans wasn’t working right. So I decided to open her back up and check. They were connected fine so I thought I’d disconnect and reconnect them to see if that would fix them, but I applied too much force and ended up ripping the cable, forcing me to replace the whole fan too.

Bought 200$ in MOCA (Coax based Ethernet) for there to be a crimp in the wall. After buying weird rj45s I finally found a female connector, all in all I paid 350 or so dollars for gigabit in my room in the end

Help old people with computers for fun. I know this lady who's Parkinson's/arthritis/whatever was so advanced she couldn't double click the home button on the iPad fast enough. I recommended she buy an android at that point. Everyone I know recommends apple devices for their simplicity but they can do better in the accessibility department. Windows is probably the best with the key delay feature which helps when obasan wants to type on her Compaq like she's dialing a toll free nunber

Back in the day I was the idiot buying the cheapest power supplies possible and I had two separate combustion incidents. One time the PSU itself just popped and filled my room with smoke. Second time a fan splitter cable set on fire with no apparent external cause – maybe unstable voltage from the power supply and/or a bad connection in the cable?
I know what I'm doing now and I haven't had any disasters since but I do live in fear of my graphics card's 12VHPWR connector blowing up.
Fake edit: actually there was something more recent – has anyone here NOT at some point bent CPU pins? RIP to my old Ryzen 3600. Always remember to heat the IHS before attempting heatsink removal.

I had a laptop that I kept plugged in 24/7 for a couple years (before I knew this would destroy the battery). When I got a computer to replace it I realized that I had almost killed the battery, and it eventually died leaving it unable to boot.
I took out the battery which turned my laptop into a pseudo-desktop since it had to be plugged in in order to work.
On top of that, the boot process is something I'll never forget.

Step 1: turn on the laptop
Step 2: it says that the wattage is too low, so I press diagnose
Step 3: wait for it to get to the rainbow screen of test colors
Step 4: force power off
Step 5: turn on laptop again
Step 6: wattage error again, but press continue
Step 7: congratulations it booted.

If I didn't hit diagnose the cpu caps at 300Mhz, and if I didn't reboot during the repair process a loud beeping noise would happen which was annoying, I believe one time it also caused it to fail to boot.
