I didn't really get how bad it was at the time, the water was about knee-deep (on an adult, mind you) when I got home from school and we had a pretty old house. While my mom and dad were trying to salvage whatever electronics and furniture they could from water damage, they left me and my brother upstairs in our bedroom, with what was essentially a picnic. My brother and I sat up and ate sandwiches, fruit salad and custard creams in bed while our kind-of-busted CRT played old movies we picked up from the charity shop. All the while we could hear the wind howling outside and the rain spattering hard against our window. I don't think I'll ever feel so safe and comfy in what was honestly a very precarious situation again. The house was ~mostly~ fine afterwards, and now I really love thunderstorms.

The plot is risky and can be enjoyed on multiple levels, the characters are complex and human, and it has an extremely strong aesthetic sense. Despite that the whole thing also has a real human touch that shows up in dumb sci-fi geekery, embracing genre tropes, and silly bits that should be tone-breaking.
