I'm new here and things seem sort of quiet so I thought I'd make a thread anyone could post in pretty easily: old school favourites.

Everyone's got a game they loved from a time gone by, so let's talk about them!

Here's one of my all time favourites to start us off: Crystalis on the NES. It felt so much smoother than any other game I'd played around that time and you were so free to travel around, the magic was interesting and the world was constructed so well.. I almost wish I could forget everything about it so I could experience it all over again as if it were new.

It was sure a good looking game for the system too.

Not one that I played during my childhood (I'm not that old) but I am a fan of old games and this one is surely one of my favorites.
Other great games I love from that time are double dragon and contra.

I've actually never played Battletoads or Double Dragon but Contra was always a lot of fun.

I find these days I'm really enticed to play these older games by their nostalgia/comfy factors. I still have a lot of my old consoles, NES included, maybe I'll pick up Battletoads if I can track it down for a decent a deal…

I'm not sure if it would be considered old, but Ape Escape was the first game I'd ever played on a console and it was so damn fun. I didn't even have a functioning memory card (to beat the game completely I borrowed it from a friend and we played together for a little while) so I'd always just start from the beginning and get to the point where you first capture Specter, but by then I'd usually get tired of playing.

The music was also phenomenal.

Ape Escape came out 17 years ago in North America—I'd consider it decently old.

Lately I've been playing a lot of Animal Crossing and Klonoa, they're more or less around the same age as Ape Escape… I think there was a real golden age of comfy gaming from around 97 until about 2002.

The Jurassic Park games were pretty neat.

My first memory was watching my parents play Contra 3. The game had one of the most interesting enemy, environmental designs out of any game out of the SNES.

Would also have to give Earthbound a mention. I only played it a couple of years ago, but that is one of the few games I would consider "magical".

Then there are some honorable mentions like Flashback, Cybernator, Phalanx. The SNES was one of the best old school consoles.

>double dragon and contra
Good taste. Unfortunately, I have never played the original Battletoads (despite being on my backlog for the longest time), only Battlemaniacs.

Earthbound is truly nice. The battlesystem isn't even good, and so on, but it still holds a special place inside my heart.
I can't even describe what it really is. Maybe it just stimulates my sense of adventure; Especially a type of adventure that is set in the modern world, and is actually fun, wacky, and lighthearted (well, lighthearted most of the time).

whoa, I played this one. It was on a Namco arcade pack for the PSP.

my favorite game of all time, dragon quest 8, is around 13 years old. funny, considering it was on ps2 and i've always thought of the ps2 as a modern console my whole life

Contra is one of my favourite games, I started speed running it recently (badly). The quality of the control in the game is excellent, even by today's platforming standards. I do like NES games, but Contra was a gem floating in a sea of shit for a long time for me. I always felt as though the majority of the difficulty in the games stemmed from the horrific controls.

I'd recommend hunting down the Japanese version (Gryzor). It is almost identical, except for a few cutscenes scattered throughout the game and a map thingy in between stages that is similar to the one in Ghosts n Goblins. It also has some really cool background/foreground animations that bring the game to life a bit more.

Myst is incredible, I wish I had gotten the chance to play it when it was first released. Despite its age, I haven't ever played another game that can mimic its atmosphere.

I played it back in 1995, but i was so young then, I didn't understand much about the game, or what to do in that kind of game. I think I would appreciate it a lot more if I played it today.

I have this game on the SNK 40th anniversary collection and on NES Online on Switch. I might give this a shot, thanks sushi!
