Nothing better to do on a dark night than turn off the lights, curl up (with a hot drink preferably) and watch an anime with a Gothic atmosphere or murder mystery. In every benighted corner is an anime girl waiting for you with a knife.

I recommend Another. It was so good that I watched the whole thing within a couple of days. Anyone else know any good shows?

I watched this when it was still on air, it was fun to theorize about it with my friends at the time, through the ending was kinda disappointing and worse than the illusions we've made.
Still, don't mind my rambling, watch an anime called Boogiepop Phantom, i'm sure you'll like.

Monster is a good show. It ain't Gothic, but there's plenty of tension.

Might be a bit far fetched and more on the comfy side, but I think both Mushishi and even more so Natsume Yuujinchou fit this category. Some mushi (the main "antagonist" of Mushishi) can be quite creepy. Picture related.

Thematically similar anime include xxxHolic, Ayakashi and Mononoke (not Princess Mononoke), and I think all of those fit too with varying levels of comfy & creepy. I remember their pacing and aesthetic being really comfy, but it has been years since I last saw any of them.

Rozen Maiden is definitely up there as well, for me at least. Some might not agree though. Laplace's Demon is a creepy fella.

Haibane Renmei and even Serial Experiments Lain might do it for some people as well.

Speaking of Gothic, there's always Gosick which literally means Gothic. Too bad I can't really remember anything about it, so I can't say if it was comfy or creepy.

And while we are at it, why not come up with some creepy-comfy manga. All I can think of at the moment are Hitsugi Katsuki no Kuro and Franken Fran, but then again I'm not too big into manga.

OT: This would've been a great image for bumping the tea thread. I'm just gonna leave it here though.

OP here, just finished Boogiepop. I would be lying if I said I wasn't at least a little confused, but I nonetheless enjoyed it. The atmosphere and music were particularly well done, and the individual stories never left me bored. Working out the connection between all of them, aside from the common theme of 'memories', is puzzling, though. Thanks for the rec!

Do you have a good torrent for Mushishi?

scrolling past this thread, I saw OPs image and thought to myself 'what a coincidence, I just finished that show' before remembering I picked it up because of this thread.
