Hell yeah!
I'm in the same situation though, I haven't been camping proper in a very long time.
I've used quite a few alcohol stoves, my favourite is a coke can penny stove though. Simple, efficient, and literally free with a little bit of work. The only downsides are that you need a really good windshield to keep it burning well, and that if you use one with smaller holes they can soot up over time if your fuel's not good.
I love gasifier stoves too, they're wierdly expensive to buy, but you can throw a pretty good one together from a few cans in no time.
They're bulkier than an alcohol stove, but mostly hollow so you can store cooking stuff in it for transport, and with any luck you don't need to bring fuel atall!
You need way less wood than for an open fire, so it's easier to scavenge stuff lying around.
